"My bro is dead. He's gone. But he's in my heart! On my back! He lives on as a part of me! If you're going to dig, dig to breach the heavens. Even if it's my own grave I'm digging, I keep going. Once I've dug my way through, that means I've won! Who the hell do you think I am? I'm Simon. I'm not my bro, Kamina. I'm ME! Simon the digger!"
@@WalkerRileyMC Upon self reflection and talking it out with others, I've decided that it's because my world views and sense of aesthetics are incompatible with Gurren Lagann. And yes Nia's death is the reason. I'm not entirely convinced that her death was unavoidable and the animators did it simply because they could. I can think of several ways to do it. (IE-Simon doesn't kill the Anti-spiral he just beats it and it agrees to withdraw and give spirals a chance to prove it wrong; Simon sacrifices his drill core to use its energy to create a human body for Nia and give up the ability to pilot a Lagann forever; Simon somehow trades his life for hers). But he didn't even try and I can't respect him for that. And for what? To save a bunch of people who were going to have him killed just because it was convenient for them? I learned a long time ago that sacrificing your happiness for others is never worth it. They never appreciate it and you always regret it in the end. And even if it couldn't be for whatever reason, there were better ways to do it. When a main character dies it should accomplish something. The same way Tony Stark's death saved the entire universe. (IE-Even at full power Simon can't beat the Anti-spiral so using her connection to it, Nia sacrifices her own life to weaken it enough for Simon to finish it off,) Now THAT is an ending that I would accept.
Kamina the pioneer showed us that the ceiling was something to be pierced. Simon the digger bore through the ceiling with his unending perseverance. Rossiu and the others now have to hold the bar and raise it even higher.
I can't believe I didn't watch this anime for over 10 years. I'm on episode 24 and every aspect of it just lights a fire in my heart. Seriously one of the best animes of all time. I wish they made more animes like this. Edit: I just finished Gurren Lagann and Kill la kill, and now im depressed asf. Also I think Ill check out those movies too. Edit 2: Back in 2023, I didnt expect this much likes! But yeah this show is still amazing. Thank you everyone!
Go watch the 2 movies. It basically recaps the entire series. Movie 1 does the first 12 episodes and movie 2 does the other 12. The difference is that because they are in movie form they have more budget to make the fights better. You can't watch the movies without watching the anime first because in the movies the story is condensed into like 2 hours. If you got chills just watching the anime then the movies will blow your socks off.
@@mahmoud8607 Eh questionable. JJBA _is_ good, but TTGL is so good, that it basically made its own genre. A lot of people credit and compare TTGL to new action anime with powerful coming-of-age stories. Gurren Lagann is so awe-inspiring with its intricate character development: Kamina was fleshed out in a two dimensional way in 7 episodes. Gurren Lagann did all of this in less episodes than JJBA. JJBA is great for many, but TTGL is such an impressive anime for being produced 12 almost 13 years ago. The fact that it's still debated EVEN to this day is proof of the series' power. Gurren Lagann incites a simple message that paved way to many badass animes now. It's the OG "fuck you antagonist! I'm badass and overpowered!" that people hooked people into anime.
This anime and its messages got me through the roughtest spot in my life years ago and continue on to this day. The core drill still shine, the soul's fire burning bright. Always.

Nobody of any real worth would accept suffering or helplessness so long as they had some measure of ability to change it. The only thing Gurren Lagann proved in the end is that the Joker was right.

I know right? I was having trouble figuring out who the protagonist was at first, Simon or Kamina. Then Episode 8 happened... The only episodes I havent liked so far are 9 through 11 (on 15 atm), because of how they treat Simon's grief for Kamina.
@@matthewramsdell3877 Actually I'm selfish. I can't understand why someone would be okay with giving up their chance for happiness like Simon was, especially when others only have their happiness because of you. Nor can I understand how someone can have the power to change their situation and not use it. I can't respect Simon for not even trying to save Nia. Nor can I understand why someone who is denied everything the one chance they had for happiness wouldn't want the entire world to burn. Gurren Lagann's ending is a challenge to everything I believe in and it infuriates me.

I dunno about you, but SRW X is my heart cannon with Gurren Lagann since Nia gets to actually live. That and T.T. G.L. is ridiculous as a battleship, even if you only get it for two maps.
@@matthewchen8452 Whoa hey, that is false information. Yes they were dating throughout the timeskip but there was no mention of them engaging in "the facts of life" throughout the timeskip.
@@truthspreader1996 I get that yoko is the kiss of death and all but in episode 8 I knew where things were gonna turn out. If Simon didn’t see them kiss then he could’ve focused and win the battle like that. And if Thymilph or what ever his name is came out in his personal gunman earlier I think. The way it could’ve been was Kittan battling viral and Kamina taking on Him with back up
Gurren Lagann is something special. I cried I laughed but most importantly I learned things that inspired me to keep going no matter what. Even when it’s hard. Thanks Gurren Lagann!!!
Reminder that this show was just meant to be a simple parody of gundam, but ended up being more memorable and moving then a lot of anime that came out since.
>Simple parody It literally is a tribute to other Robot anime. The green energy and the fact that it is deems as dangerous is a reference to Getter Robo and Getter Rays, the combination of a smaller Mecha that "sits" upon a bigger mech (by comparison) is also a reference to Mazinger Z (with a little difference being in Mazinger, the Hover Pilder is a small aircraft that functions as the Mazinget brains while Lagann is a straight up robot).
The montage is surprisingly good and consistently to the series. Almost done re-watching Gurren Lagann on TV. I assume 1 or 2 days more will probably enough to finish. For some reason it triggers nostalgic depression once again so I can't keep shit inside of me and proceeding to write a comment on almost every Gurren Lagann video (OST mainly). There's something very weird with the fact I can't clearly identify what cause my depression in the case of GL. Obviously the death of beloved characters and strong nostalgic feeling cause what shall cause, you can't help it. The main spirit and moral of the series is surely brings a tear to man's eye, we will count this as an important factor too, but what really hits me is a presence of the logical end of the story... I mean there's no "open final", just a big cold dot in the story. They showed aged characters which are also living by the past keep the understanding their time is gone watching the new era to come and they are no longer in need here... This is what truly hits on many levels, now you literally feel like you lived a life with them to see the end. Can't really bother myself to count how much existential things Gurren Lagann contains. This is truly a legend, no matter underrated or overrated it is always will keep a special attention in my heart.
This kid was deku before Deku was even thought 💭 of !! He was my hero loved this amazing anime thank you syfy or adultswim !! Those where my scorce of anime back when I was young
Time for a long rant! Deku is a trash character. No shits given. Constructed as an strategical genius who meant to overcome pure talent and congenital skills by pure study and strategy (Naruto yet not a dimwit), became an idiot who gets an almost undeserved ultimate power and doesn't even use it with the brains he was supposed to have, as well as having a plot armor the size of Super TTGL, and it becomes even worse since he now has undeserved new powers by plot's convenience, a near Deus Ex Machina. Though that's not to say My Hero doesn't have good chars. On the contrary, Mirio and Kirishima are excellent examples of very well constructed characters with defined weaknesses and a true drive to progress and develop in more than one sense. The manga should be completely theirs, but of course the writer is in love with Deku's unexistant development. Guy is so bad he actually regresses and becomes a stereotype more than he becomes a character. Meanwhile? Simon is nearly perfect. Not idealized, at least not until the very end after he earns it. He's a very human character who develops smoothly and nicely, who starts weak as he is a boy, and forges himself into the very man of even male's dreams. The simplest of ideas with the best of executions, something that proves that tropes and stereotypes aren't bad: they just need to be done right. And Simon is done right.
even a drill can be break thats why he needs someone to repair it and making him drill the hole of hope even further BECAUSE THE DRILL IS OUR SOULS THE SOULS THAN WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS
