Filmed on 27 November 2019 by Akiko Yura
‘Art After Hours’ is a series held Wednesday evening where the Art Gallery of NSW offers a regular program of live music, lectures and celebrity talks, drawing workshops, film screenings, gallery tours and, of course, nocturnal access to its latest exhibitions.
The Japan Supernatural exhibition presents wildly imaginative works by Japanese artists past and present - from the pioneering work of the 18th-century painter Toriyama Sekien to contemporary superstar Takashi Murakami.
The original music was designed to respond to the themes of the exhibition featuring Noriko Tadano on voice, shamisen and kokyu and Toshi Sakamoto of Wadaiko Rindo on taiko percussion.
Japan Supernatural was a finalist in the international Museum and the Web GLAMi (The Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums Innovation) Awards 2020.
