All of the mama cheri bikes I see on todays RU-vid have cables for the brakes. I lived in Japan for many years 60's 70's and even pictures from 2002 and most mama chari bikes had a mechanical braking system, not cables. I have pictures to prove this. With the mechanical system you never had to worry about a broken cable.
