In today's video, we're introducing Japan's mama-chari bicycle (ママチャリ自転車), which is the most commonly used bicycle in all of Japan. Most Japanese families have one of these for each family member, and they have a lot of useful and unique points compared to other bicycles, including built in lights with hub generators, internal hub gearing, fully standing kick stands, baskets (for your dogs??), and more..

tomoko tomoko Tomoko. Oil that chain. At least 1 time a year. Or you will be walking all your life. And we all know Tomoko is to pretty to be out in the hot sun for hours walking. Or we will have baked Tomoko on a stick

Just a couple points on bikes I've picked up over the years. You're right about leg extension needing to be correct or else you're working a lot harder. The knee should be slightly bent when the pedal is in the bottom position. If you ever tried riding a smaller kids bike as an adult you'd soon find yourself wearing your legs out. On the gear shifter not working, different shifting mechanisms require the rider to pedal a certain way for the next gear to engage properly. Sometimes you continue to smoothly pedal while changing the gear knob. On other bikes, particularly with inside hub shifters you either stop pedaling when shifting or even back pedal slightly to have the next gear engage. Maybe she still has the instructions that came with the bike which explains proper shifting technique. Would love to visit Japan and possibly even live there. My daughter has learned to speak, write, and understand when someone speaks to her in Japanese. She'd love to visit there, too!

aha, and they sell their rusty bikes here in the Philippines. I have a mamachari bike which works fine. All I need is the sturdy body, the shifters, breaks, tyres and chains can still be bought from bike shops. right now, I changed the shifter and gears with an after-market shimano gear set and my bike is good to go.

Love the mama chari, I ride a fat bike and a track bike so I look forward to riding mama chari when I come to Japan, they're really comfortable.

When I was in Vietnam almost a year ago, I saw several silver versions of this type bicycle that people would ride. I wonder if they are referred to in a similar Vietnamese name.

Actually the headlight of motorcycle have to be turned on all-day always. That is for safety. The car driver will see you much more easier during daylight, he can also see a motorcycle behind the car from rear-view mirror. So it is better to make headlight always on for bicycle too.

Nice video Cruise :) I am amazed that japanese OL ride this wearing their work outfit short skirts and high heels. Some of them might ride holding umbrella, talking on phone and smoking cigarette at the same time LoL. Multitasking overload :)

Yeah, the heel thing really gets me. The police are pretty strict with the umbrella and phone thing though. Thankfully not many cycling smokers where I live Haha

That lock is like an open invitation for anyone wanting to steal mama-chari. My seat was stolen as well. There used to be a perv in Helsinki. In Japan they should probably sell them like used panties in a vending machine or something so that pervs would not steal them. There must be also bike repair shops for all those mama-charis when they get rusty and old.

I'm pretty sure that you like to build your own bikes, just like I do. How about a new project: building a cool Papa-Chari, so that men can drive to the supermarket without the shame-red colour in their faces😂. A black bike with GT-stripes or a skull design for example. Also wide tyres, hangers for side-bags and so on. Would be great to see your equivalent creation for men.

90% of Mama-Chari's are garbage. If you've ever tried to fix a flat on the rear tire you will realize this. They're far too complicated... which is why it costs between $30 to $50 just to fix a flat on one. In fact I went to fix my wife's rear tire flat and found a factory installed tube which was the wrong size. it was for a much larger tire but they just folded it and put it in anyway. The Mama-Chari frame design is great but the bicycles themselves are mostly garbage that last just a couple of years. Just a total massive waste. You're better off paying a bit more for a name brand bike that is well made and simple to repair.
