Thank you so much Miku and Bobby for this conversation! I'll be going to Japan for the first time in 13 years this year, and have been studying Japanese. Since I'm Chinese-American, I was often wondering if I should initiate my conversations by first saying that I'm a foreigner and don't fully understand Japanese yet, so that they don't confuse me for being Japanese if I just jump straight into my question (I've been told by every Japanese I spoke to that I sound native, and while I do have good pronunciation and pitch accent, there's still a lot of vocabulary and grammar I haven't learned so I'm far from fluent). For some reason, I fear a scenario in which natives just start speaking to me with fast native Japanese and I would be reacting like a deer-in-headlights where i just have no idea what they're saying. So hearing from Bobby that it's a good idea to mentally prepare them with a warm-up intro is so helpful to me, I will make sure to do that. Thank you both so much again, 本当に勉強になりました。ありがとうございました!

I understand that fear...!! I learned Spanish in Spain and when I went to Mexico, I talked to people and they used very very different expressions and I was like "what did they just say? Why are they laughing like crazy... ha-ha-ha😅" But don't worry 😉 You can just say すみません。今のわかりませんでした。まだ日本語勉強中です! (Sorry I didn't get that. I'm still studying Japanese!!) Or like you said you could introduce yourself first and tell them you are from the states:) The most important thing is to be okay with not being perfect. I learned to laugh at my mistakes and it helped lol like when I said to someone "Oh! You're a baby shitter" instead of babysitter🤣 But if you keep on putting yourself out there, you will get used to native speaker's Japanese little by little :) So enjoy the process:):)

@@mikurealjapanese Thank you Miku-sensei for your wonderful encouragement! I love your suggestions, and yes you're right, it's ok to not be perfect! I have to learn to be ok with making mistakes and just enjoy the process :)

Thank you for sharing your perspective Bobby. It was an interesting discussion. If I may provide some education on the common vernacular used regarding Americans of mixed ethnicity... in the context of Japanese Americans, there are so many among us who are of mixed ethnicity. But all of us, whether 100% Japanese or otherwise are referred to as Americans. Thus when we say we are "mixed" or "half", we would say for example, my mother is white and my father is Japanese. Or my mother is Mexican and my father is Japanese. Those of us whose Japanese families have been here in the United States for generations would never say we are half American and half Japanese. Hope this provides some additional context and perspective.

I guess Bobby is annoyed with such things because he doesn't know himself wheter he is American or Japanesse.. Miku, why haven't uasked him how he feels about it?
