I'm watching this in the year 2022. Finland is so advanced and prepared for anything. From the viewpoint of an American in Califonia, this is incredible. In our state, Republicans complain that a high speed traind would cost too much and don't need it. In Finland they are prepared to give Russia the middle finger at any time. Finland is on the list of my countries to visit, along with Sweden and Denmark. Thank you for a great video.

Because a high speed train in US would cost too much. As simple as that.

Thats americas problem, you guys are so divided over everything which makes people think what does it mean to be american? also as norbert said it would cost too much and wouldnt be worth it in america, americans have this way of thinking that if you are democrat then everything suggested by the republicans is automatically bad, and vice versa.

@@Alexandros.Mograine Do not even compare to other country if there are less people in the whole country than in larger cities. 8MM is statistical error margin when counting world population.
@Alexandros.Mograine

@@snake3837 how am i comparing finland and usa? just stating a fact that usa is divided and things are easier to do in finland because we arent as divided. the reasons why this is so are irrelevant to my point. but on that note there are countries with more population and more unity.

@@samuelk6454 Yes, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Yeah, It's a pretty nice place to live. But, when I think about stuff like public transit and infrastructure, I think I'd rather live in Helsinki. Or just about anywhere in Europe for that matter. You guys do urban design much better than we North Americans, Shiny skyscrapers are nice, but they don't make for a nice city if you don't have good walkability and reliable, convenient public transit, and a well-thought out public realm.
@samuelk6454
@samuelk6454 3 года назад
@@highwaysbyways4281 Yeah, looks like a cool place with good skyscrapers. I have noticed that many american and canadian cities are full if roads that are grids. In finland we dont have that. If you look Helsinki or other finnish cities you see that we build very differently. In roads we have many curves. In us and Canada residental areas are very differently made. They have more grids
@highwaysbyways4281
@highwaysbyways4281 3 года назад
@@samuelk6454 Edmonton does follow a grid pattern quite closely, our topography allowed that. Just the river valley and ravines break it up. If you look at Calgary, the rolling hills mean much more curvy freeways and arterial roads there. But local roads are usually quite curvy now, it's actually cheaper for developers to build a new neighbourhood that way.

What?! I lived in Helsinki for a year and just discovered this now! Well I knew there was a bunker system that can fit the entire population fo Helsinki but never knew this road network amd that it was just open like that. So anybody can drive down there and get out on another end if he wants to, for example, bypass traffic? Why is it even open? To divert heavy trucks from the streets above? Except for the parking lots inside, I get that.
@tissot233
@tissot233 Год назад
It is a bit hidden and most people would not be able to navigate it like this. Technically anybody can drive there, but they are not really for the purpose to bypass traffic. They are interlinked service tunnels and tunnels between underground parking facilities. Whole Helsinki is carved like this as much of the main data, electricity, water and heating pipes are in open tunnels. Though, those being critical infra those service tunnels are blocked from general public. You can see some of those entrances in the tunnels in this video.

Underneath the whole of downtown Helsinki is basically a bomb-shelter where 750 000 people can live for (I seem to remember) two weeks incase there's a war/nuclear/chemical strike etc. These areas in peacetimes are used by businesses for various reasons like garage or hockey-rink with the proviso that the area can be emptied in just a few hours in an emergency, so no longterm storage etc.
@Dewkeeper
@Dewkeeper 3 года назад
Its connects a few smaller tunnels and underground parking spaces to pass under some of the more crowded parts of the city center. It's mainly to reduce traffic aboveground and provide easier maintenance access to certain buildings. The camera lens makes it look a lot more cramped than it actually is. If your car broke down you could probably get a tow truck to show up in a few minutes. Honestly its very clean and nice, it's treated as any public street is (though it's only for motor vehicles). Keep in mind that Finland is extremely safe, Helsinki has around 1/8th of the violent crime of knoxville (roughly 800/100k vs 100/100k if i did the math right), never mind the fact that this is in the better part of town.

Don't even have to wear a coat or step outdoors at all when you travel from home to downtown in the winter if you happen to live in a building connected to a metro-subway station, because in the downtown area you can walk the heated underground pedestrian tunnels connected to the public transport system, shopping malls and department stores etc, and pedestrian tunnels are more busy.

Seems to be an early morning, and general traffic is not allowed to go through the tunnel. Physicaly, there is nothing stopping you from driving through, and the tunnel is considered a public road, but there is a section of tunnel where general traffic is not allowed (only delivery vehicles). The primary purpose of the tunnel is to provide underground access to shops (for deliveries) in the pedestrianized city centre, and they also provide access to underground parking facilities in the city centre. Off limits, there are some underground loading bays, and the largest one states that they have about 130-150 deliveries per day (it's quite a large loading bay considering it's underground). The secondary purpose is (obviously, cause we're talking about Finland) to act as a bomb shelter. You can spot the heavy doors (they are hiding in plane sight), as well as some fire proof doors (thinner, but more noticable). There are also some other tunnels for pedestrian traffic, connecting points of intrests (stations, parking facilities, shopping centres, etc.) that provide actually usefull connections for pedestrian traffic in the city center
