【4K, 60Fps Colorized】Laborers of Shanghai Broadway Mansions, 1934, 80 years ago【AI Restoration】

Hello, this is DGSpitzer!
I used a series of AI to restore a video from 1934, 80 years ago! It's about the construction of Shanghai Broadway Mansions. This landmark building still exists nowadays~
Due to the age of the footage, original audio is partially missing, therefore I added on a song for the second part of this video, "Lovesick Dream" by Yao li, who is the last queen of The Bund in Shanghai 1930s: • 经典老歌-相思梦（姚莉主唱）

The original footage is provided by University of South Carolina's Moving Image Research Collections, thanks MIRC for their support!
Using DeepRemaster, DAIN，DeOldify, and Topaz for restoration.

No safety harness and lock hook, that’s awesome people in that time don’t joke around crane lift. Today in USA has OSHA illegal to lift workers through the crane and ALL MUST WEAR SAFE HELMET AND HARNESS. I am happy to see the past in colorized.

I actually think they used it as a lift. There is no logical reason to stand on your cargo like that.. so workers needed to get somewhere high, cram theirselfs in a tight spot and ride it out. crazy right

Hi , and yes time travel on ... It's as magic as always , and frightening too , those workers so high in the sky on the loads of the cranes , woa what a work to do , i could not , i even get dizzy on a chair ...lol . Nice images , no quality defects , it's really magic to see them living a hundred years ago . Once again i've got to thank you , marvellous work . Peace from france

Thank you for this and the other restorations. I worked in construction like this for 50years. It may look dangerous to people who have never done this kind of work, but you soon develop a head for heights...it is perfectly safe if you act sensibly. Hard hats are a menace and do little to mahe you safe. I would have enjoyed eating my midday rice astride a steel beam on the thirtieth floor 🤣🤣

1930s and 1940s Shanghai was the most decadent, outrageous period in its history. Trade, Gambling, Prostitution, Triads, Nightclubs - Shanghai had it all. Must have been fascinating living there at the time

These AI colourisations work so much better for black and white video than photos. Old colour video is truly stunning, AI colourization can never match that but compared to black and white video i love it.. just brings things alive even if people do have bright ass orange faces.

Previous upload shows circa 1910-1920 with no vehicles present. This video in 1934 has vehicles. I wonder if it's really that much of advancement in technology of it was a different area (rural vs urban)

I believe both factors matter. technology advanced fast at the beginning of the 20th century and 10 years can make a lot of differences. also, this film was shot in Shanghai, the one and only most prosperous city in the far east at that time, even though the capital was Beijing.

they have ni idea about the shitnado coming. Nice restauration by the way. I had a question about the sea color. You trained your model with today's shangai sea, but the color wasnt the same then so maybe its not accurate. Or did you color the sea using another way ?

From Los Angeles, U.S.A I am a building inspector. There was no OSHA then there, Today's I-beam iron construction workers in U.S. still take breaks in the sky, walk on the I-beams, but they have Fall protections, harness and lanyard. They have unions to fight for their privileges, benefits, and rights.
