Any Japanese can teach me?The "名" of 名古屋 is pronounced "な", and the "名" of 名鉄 is pronounced "めい". I know that “名” is the abbreviation of “名古屋”,but why are the pronunciations different? BTW,I am also learning Chinese, the “名” has only one pronunciation in Chinese ,名(ming)古屋 and 名(ming)鉄.
Nagoya Railroad Co., Ltd. is the official name of the company, but most of the group's companies use the common name Meitetsu. The "na" and "mei" readings are often used together; for example, the old 名古屋高等商業学校, Nagoya Kosho, Meikosho (名高商) had been used more than 100 years ago. Personally, I believe they adopt the one sounds/pronounces better.
This is especially common in company names and abbreviations between cities. The abbreviation for 東京 (To-Kyo) and 横浜 (Yoko-Hama) is 京浜. But the pronunciation is Kei-Hin. These things can be found all over Japan.
