Exactly. I do understand her because when I was young, I was quite the doormat. But, now that I am quite a bit older, I have learned not to let people walk all over me like that. But, when I was young, I had low self-esteem, I was love-starved, yet I believed that I had to earn love, and I had abandonment issues, and an inferiority complex and was afraid of being alone all the time, even when I consciously knew that I would be better off without that person. I have never been officially diagnosed, but I have lots of reasons to suspect that I might have Asperger syndrome, too. I also had trust issues when I was young, as well...so I would never stick with a dude who gambled all my hard-earned money away or had the attitude that this dude has...for very long at all. However, I wouldn't have been upfront about it...I was too afraid to do something like that. Instead, what I tended to do was secretly plan my escape and then leave on the sly. I did that several times. Of course, I have never been married...I just lived with a few guys....at different times, and the place was always in my name and I paid all the bills with my low income. All my past boyfriends were scrubs. Kind of like low-grade gigolos with substance abuse issues.

@@dianapickett1690 They weren't all on drugs, but all except one of them were alcoholics...just like my father. The one with no substance abuse issues was severely clinically depressed, and that can be just as hard to live with as an alcoholic or drug addict. I'm glad I didn't marry any of those guys. It would have been way worse if I had. I stayed with the depressive for 12 years because I couldn't bring myself to kick him out, even though he didn't help with the bills and he didn't even clean my apartment. I finally got free when he died of colon cancer. I didn't even know he was sick until after he died. I didn't even know he was dead for about a week because at that point we stayed in our own rooms and didn't see each other very much. I was working a night shift and sleeping during the day.

Yes. My cousin runs a shelter for abused women - both physically and mentally abused - and the women she helps range from 18 all the way through retired seniors. What is especially sad is often they are carrying residual trauma from having been treated the same way by parents and siblings so are unable to see their own worth and that they do actually have a choice to leave. They've been beaten down they believe they are not worth any better, that they are to blame because they are useless. Physical wounds heal in a week or two. The mental wounds? Those take years and years and sometimes, they never fully recover and end up over compensating. I remember a professor once said "A physical wound will heal in a short time and might never happen again. But hearing "you're so stupid" once will take a hundred "you're so smart!" to heal."

I did not have that happen to me. But someone asked me to do something similar; use 100% of my income to rent a house. Fill it with a dozen illegal Mexicans who HE says will pay rent...and he gets half the profit, and I get half the profit. I said no for multiple reasons. He would have zero investment and get half the 'profit' Obviously illegal so we could all get arrested. I would have zero income until he convinced a bunch of people I have never met, who are illegals, to pay rent? Such a scammer! He did get away with a different scam that netted him $10,000 from insurance fraud. Last I heard of him was he got shot in some small drug deal gone wrong.

It happened to someone I knew. His last few months would make a good text story. In a short time, he found his wife was cheating on him with a mutual friend, she kicked him out of the house he and his father built, he got laid off, and he had been diagnosed with an illness that would require management for the rest of his life. It was too much, and he went into his garage with a shotgun. It was a closed casket funeral, and the family and his friends were so angry at his wife she had to sit in the back row at the church. Of all the curveballs thrown at him, the affair and being kicked out hurt the most. Paul was only 28.

Sadly, people like that exist. I am Nigerian, and stories like these are quite common. Being a "wife" is very important for society, and women put up with a whole lot of NONSENSE just to be married.

@@Xerame506 that is very true that many countries may not follow that type of law, however I would counter that most of these stories are most likely written in an American point of view. Likely the authors of the stories think like many do in that if they are asked to leave the home they have to. Kind of something many don’t think about in the heat of the moment.

She keeps saying "my own house." But she doesn't really spell it out that they have no say about the house.

Bryan did possibly everything he could do wrong to his wife but cheat ( who knows?) I don't think I would have dealt with him as long as she did. She must have had the patience of a Saint.

Best grow a thicker skin than that or you won't get far in life.
