From what I can see, he's moving back at the very last second. I reckon he uses the Legacy control scheme - among other things, instead of your character slowly walking back still facing the target/the direction you're looking at/whatever, the character physically turns and walks normally into the direction you're going, regardless of camera movement. I found it a bit trickier to use, but it has its pros - case in point there.
I'm running in a group that has pretty much no synergy, especially compared to your group, and I was wondering what should i be realistically expecting to do as a dragoon, Im not particularly close to getting fully geared, either so that would prove to be something of a hindrance, i know that much.
Meanwhile i'm having trouble getting more than 4.1k in this fight... T_T Yeah, i have neither NIN nor RDM nor SCH in my party and my gear is still considerably worse, but still... a 1k dps gap means i have much to learn and optimize. :O
