I remember grinding in this game using those Statues at the beginning of the temple, *after* getting the Life spell (so you can use this trick to recover health). That statue at the very beginning of each temple has a chance of spawning either a Red Potion (to refill your magic) *or* an orange Iron Knuckle (a decent source of Experience Points). If you leave the temple completely (so that the game reverts to the overworld map), even if it is just one square away, you can return and get something from that same statue *again.* Since you have the Life Spell, unless your luck is horrendous, so that you _just_ get potions or get too many Iron Knuckles in a row, it is a relatively fast, easy way to grind. *Advanced version:* Just add popping into a dungeon with some high experience point enemies near the beginning, before popping back out to do as described above.

Zelda 2 feels like an NES Mario video game but just with the overworld from Super Mario World!

Haven't finished the video, but I'm far enough in that it sounds like someone half-told him a valuable strat: *Don't actually finish any temples until late game.* _Why?_ As was covered, when you place the gem into the statue at the end of the temple, you automatically level up. Anyone paying attention should notice that it takes _more_ experience points to level up the more Link has already leveled up. So... by jumping over the spot where you'd place the gem into the statue, you can *come back and level up **_later!_* Meaning, you'll do everything _else_ in that temple, so you can still progress normally. You hop over the spot that forces you to place the jewel in the statue and use the exit to leave. *Then* when you're at like Attack 6, Magic 6, and Health 6, you then *go back and start returning those gems.* Letting you quickly (relative to this game) get the most difficult leveling up done. If you think it is better just to finish the temple at the time you beat the boss, I can't argue against it. Some of the temples are _really_ tedious to revisit. XD

I think Zelda II is a good game, but it could have been a _great_ game. Let's cover the obvious; it needed a _normal_ save mechanic instead of this "You have to die to save." and "You go back to the very beginning area of the game when you die." Yes, except for the Great Palace at the end. Second, *Link's sword is too short.* Whether giving him a more generous stance or just a little longer sword, it'd help gameplay a lot! If not at the beginning of the game, then even as some kind of upgrade along the way. If making the physical sword longer was - for some reason - not technically feasible, then just adding an "attack effect" in classic video game fashion, like an energy arc, to extend the range. *Third* also has to do with upgrades... *the game locks stuff behind upgrades that should be the basic move set.* You should _not_ have to "learn" how to down stab or up stab. If the game's technical limits meant _these were all that could be added_ then like with sword length, make it a separate kind of "power up" to the existing techniques. *As for the magic spells, **_most_** should just be character "upgrades".* Especially as Spells stop once you... change scenes? Not sure how to phrase it. If the powers-that-be implemented a _rapidly_ recharging magic meter, so you could take a moment to cast all your earned buffs after each transition (when they'd reset), it'd be fine. *The didn't.* So it is pretty lame for Jump, Shield, and Reflect to be Spells and not permanent upgrades. *Why am I so sure of these things.* Fan games. I think I only had to play one to get most of the changes I mentioned, and no surprise, it was a *big* improvement. There's one by HoverBat that adds many of what I said, plus some that make sense in hindsight. If anyone has PG's ear, considering suggesting he play it. :)

Product of its time at the dawn of gaming. Doubt it'll ever happen but it would be amazing to see another 2D Zelda with modern conveniences, perhaps a Four Swords-type adventure.

Yeah, I'm down with them giving us games in a wider variety of "classic" Zelda styles, *including* this one. The fan-made HD remake of Zelda II is quite nice!
