I'm from the "hood" and I rap. and I love the music from sonic adventure 2. especially the knuckles raps. they were well written and captured the energy of the level and the situation well. so why hate on it?? the rapper even made a subtle reference to the valley of death. while youre in pumpkin valley with all the ghosts. and he did it in a way that was kid friendly. I thought that was clever.

Disagree strongly with this theory, especially considering that Hunnid-P is actually singing as himself in these songs but putting himself in a third person perspective watching knuckles, whilst also in some cases simultaneously being knuckles in first person. Wall of text incoming Lets break it all down - 1. Kick the Rock Ekidona (The japanese word for Echinda - not your logic leap), Thats what i'm representing. - This is Hunnid-P blatantly stating that he is representing knuckles the Echinda. Never seen a mic hog spit like a menace - Now i'm not sure if you're familiar with competitive music situations (among rap, hip-hop and karaoke). But a Mic Hog, is precisely that. A person which hogs the microphone to prevent someone else from out doing them - with an insinuation that their own lyrical style is quite crap. I'm almost certain Hunnid-P is half-parodying the fact that he is the only voice in all of knuckles songs, and that the musical style is 'spitting' rhymes. Alternatively the representation of Mic Hog actually refers to Sonic and how he constantly tends to have quick quips to taunt his opponents with, with Sonic literally being a Hedgehog. The rest of this stanza is just generally about knuckles mission/purpose in wild canyon The second and third Stanza are indeed a little deeper, but its over knuckles confliction over feelings towards rouge the bat. Yeah Rogue, She's sexy and smooth ... I'm feelin' her in mysterious ways - Knuckles knows his primary purpose is to protect the master emerald (just listen to every other line) and this was his purpose. But he's conflicted with feeling, "Give up the emerald, or die, i don't love you". The point that "I don't love you" is said at all seems to be a justification to himself. The song kick the rock, is a song of frustration at how he always has to protect something which prevents him from doing things he may rather be doing and prevents him expressing feelings which could get him hurt (love). 2. A Ghost's Pumpkin Soup You know me, the fighting freak Knuckles And we're at Pumpkin Hill, you ready - Again song is immediately represented with Hunnid-P as both simultaneously from within first and third person knuckles. More stuff about finding the emeralds and how this power allows him to find them (The radar in the games is the representation of holding a shard of the emerald which allows the holder to instinctively know roughly where the other emerald bits are) This probably seems crazy, crazy, a graveyard theory A ghost tried to approach me and got Leery I ask him a question and he vanished in a second I'm walking through valleys, cryin' pumpkins in the alley Didn't seem happy, but they sure tried to get me Had to back 'em up with the fist metal crack 'em I'm hearin' someone sayin' you a chicken, don't be scared It had to be the wind, 'cause nobody wasn't there - The graveyard theory is generally a feeling of instinctive action/feeling against something without evidence. (Hence the "This probably seems crazy, CRAZY"). The fact the ghosts approached knuckles and then fled due to caution over Knuckles 'real physical nature' in a somewhat supernatural realm. Why were the ghosts cautious do you ask? Well knuckles was walking through valleys with "crying pumpkins in the alley" that "didn't seem happy". Why were these pumpkins not happy? Knuckles "back(ed) them up with his fists (either threatening through the cracking of knuckles or physically)" which knuckles claims is justified because "They sure tried to get me" Further the last two lines were taunts, and were actually directed by something. Why use the words "Nobody WASN'T there"? If "nobody was there", nothing was there. The use of the words "Nobody was not there" is that something was there, it just had no physical body. Paranoia or otherwise, if you want to believe everything is a metaphysical subconscious construction, it starts to justify almost everything because logic need not apply because in your words "Knuckles is trapped within his own mind" this is a dangerous slippery slope to base an argument on because it forgoes everything else in order to further its own narrative of knuckles creating everything. Also consider the fact that later in the game knuckles is actually confronted by an ACTUAL GHOST (possibly the same one which taunted him - especially considering the games king boom boo likes to play - he runs after you, will quickly change direction to surprise you if you 'escape' him, and when the tables turn, he runs away from you and hides like a coward, or as some might say "a chicken"). "This is knuckles, I fear none" 3. Dive into the Mellow I'm pretty sure this entire thing is either actual level description/observation OR based around the feeling that was present in Wild Canyon where knuckles wished his life was less complicated. (Hence how its a maze, 'hand' tracks keep pointing him to different doors) and this comes back to his confliction that part of him doesn't know what to do. But again the master emerald gives him purpose. 4. Deeper Not sure if the "Eggman wants to steal our soul" is actually "Eggman wants to steal the stone, keep the emeralds, and build a throne" you know, because it rhymes but again i'm basing this on what i hear, and basing it around what is currently going on/has gone on (such as eggman actively stealing gem 'stones'). Hence why knuckles isn't going to let him get away with it. The conversation with sonic is inherently less deep than you are giving undue credit for (but this is due to previous leaps which allowed you to make any such connection at all - you see why i called it a slippery slope). The conversation with sonic is based upon the fact knuckles has found himself working side by side with sonic for once, after being repeatedly duped into fighting against sonic in the past (early games, SA1) or more simply the fact knuckles doesn't like sonics care-free attitude. This is justified within itself that the fact they don't see eye to eye doesn't mean they can't help each other out to get whats important to them. This part of the song is based on what they're tasked with together. 5. Space Trip Steps Well if you weren't convincing before, you really lost it here where you struggled to find any depth because the song didn't fit your narrative. This isn't a bad thing per se, but it significantly weakens your argument. There really is very little interpretation to be given to this song. The opening: It's your main man Knuckles And we're in Meteor Herd You ready to go in space? Help me get the Emeralds - Is literally Hunnid-P once again illustrating the purpose of what you're doing in this level. Took a shuttle to space and left from our home At least we're with friends and I'm not all alone Bad thing was that the Emeralds spilled Gotta search space, man, time to get ill What's this? Can't fly or climb I just could float, hope I don't die Meteors comin' my way, weavin', gotta go straight Ain't a criminal, crime don't pay Seen a crazy look, Eggman's face - More story, depicting exactly what just happened. The meteors are used as a metaphor to depict obstacles preventing knuckles from achieving his objectives. He has to weave to avoid the object, when he "gotta go straight" (Again it'd be easier for you to argue this song is about how knuckles is rather steadfast and despite having to change direction to avoid problems and obstacles in life, he keeps moving and doesn't let anything interrupt his groove. "Seen a crazy look, Eggman's face" and "Ain't a criminal, crime don't pay" is getting at the fact that despite life is difficult, he's on a better path, and that despite you might sometimes feel crazy at how difficult it is to stay on your path. The ones that are really crazy are the ones on a bad path (like eggman). Consider it thoroughly unconvincing. Everything has depth if you press hard enough into it. That doesn't mean something is naturally deep. This. Is not naturally deep. Its got some subtleties, but its definitely not about an insane paranoid man creating his own reality because of his own confusion (when despite his occasional susceptibility to being tricked) knuckles is incredibly steadfast and assured of himself. "He ain't afraid of no one", he knows his purpose, and he knows he's not alone. Not really the traits of what you're trying to portray him as. Not bought.

It was censored in the game which doesn't make sense considering that in a cutscene after Knuckles vs. Rouge fight in the background you hear a (almost) full version of Unknown from M. E. where one of the lyrics says "Wild and hungry ain't a *damn* thing funny!"

I wouldn’t say so, as Sonic has nothing to really worry about, he’s just obnoxious. Even in mainstream games, knuckles is much more troubled than sonic, he has intense anger, and has panicked over his overprotected Emerald, while sonic just saves the day as usual. And knuckles was the only person who had the opportunity to be the suffering one, as all of Knuckles levels have songs meant to be accompanied with lyrics. Instrumental rock music in video games can’t tell a story so complex.

It was about Rugrats, and the person they said had hallucinations was Angelica Pickles, and she's supposed to be the antagonist for most of the episodes.

It's definitely food for thought... sans the drug issue (trust me you don't even need drugs to have a personal crisis and hide in your own mind) I can't dispute it considering Knuckle's precarious mindset and station in life. He's isolated, he's paranoid, he's young with a huge responsibility on his shoulders. His past is a big mystery to him and he envies Sonic's freedom (while viewing him as too flaky and irresponsible). He's cunning on his home turf but once he's out of his comfort zone he's like a foreigner in a faraway land. Insecure and scared about the security of his Emerald and home. He lacks social interaction and never got the chance to make friends and trust others. He had to grow up FAST. All he knows is that he's supposed to guard this giant rock. He functions on instinct and duty even though he doesn't fully understand it. Man I feel sorry for him now. BUT if this is the case, he's pretty ripe for character development.
This is an interesting theory but it makes no sense. Yeah Knuckles level's in SA2 were a bit bizzare but Rouge's were almost equivilant to that, so does that mean she was going through the same thing too or the exact opposite of what is believed to Knuckle's hallucinations? Also the thing about Sonic and the others being figments of his "Imagination" makes no sense because gthe previous games before SA2 and games after SA2 debunk that instantly because 1: Sonic was created way before a character such as Knuckles was even in the concept phase. Knuckles was created 3 years after Sonic The Hedgehog the first game hense the series being called Sonic The Hedgehog is proof of that. 2:The only affiliation SA2 has with any other Sonic game is Adventure because well it's a sequel to that game and Heroes because Heroes takes place after SA2. So any other game clearly has nothing to do with SA2 already debunking this theory completely. 3: The game's story was rarely about Knuckles but more about Shadow in a sense. 4: After hearing this theory, people make think that this was SUPPOSED to be the very last Sonic game ever! But think about that for a sec... Why would such an inconic character, who people fell in love with since his debut and has touched the hearts of millions only have a 10 year run? Sega has had a history of having a lot of unknown Mascots for the company and then giving up on them whenever they feel that the mascot isn't doing them any good. The last known Mascot of Sega is Alex Kidd but they had 4 others before Alex Kidd who were completely forgotten. Sonic made a mark in people's interests and they wanted Sega to continue with such an energenic character so the term you used "The Player Is Forced To Castaway Sonic For Good" or something like that isn't something Sega would do to the one mascot that is making them millions. Knuckles may be insane and have a short temper but he isn't that crazy to the point where he questions his existance. Also this was only one game with a soundtrack like this that left a lot of confusion to why Knuckles would have such an mature atmospheric soundtrack like this but this was the last time he did because different music directors are in every sonic game. Other than that this was a really well throught out and explained theory and I would like to see more.

They were always going to continue it. This is a bullshit-ass theory which gets weak in the last couple of areas, and huge assumptions are baselessly made without reason. And it was built from a Myspace post? Yeah, right. Note, this isn't against Gamer. He didn't create the theory. It's an interesting theory but it's completely wrong. I'd also like to note that I have NEVER heard of an unused ice level for Knuckles, much less to play during the credits. It would've been for Sonic if anyone if it was playable during the credits.

Another piece of in Kick The Rock's lyrics is the mention of Rouge as "A double cross thief spy". How would Knuckles know she's a double-crosser and a spy given the player wouldn't find this out unless they played the Dark Story previously. Also, what's rather interesting about the idea of Knuckles's levels changing to match his descent into madness/recovery is how assets from his previous levels are used in future ones. Anyone else notice a lot of Pumpkin Hill assets in Aquatic Mine, for example? Great theory! I definitely won't be able to look at SA2 the same way anymore.
Rouge is probably Knuckles' therapist. The same can be said for Dr Robotnik. Knuckles sees those people as his enemies when in reality they're trying to help him.

I would've at least humored the thought of this theory being the case, but if the Master Emerald is also a part of Knuckles' imagination, the theory just starts loosing its substance (or at least these songs being about Knuckles). At first, I imagined the theory revolving around Knuckles' loneliness of guarding the Master Emerald and actually never meeting a real Sonic. But if there is no Master Emerald, there would be no reason for Knuckles to fall into loneliness and hallucinations. Or drugs for that matter.

Wait a MINUTE! So that means that Sonic is a representation of Knuckles' past-self. Had too much to do, rarley got a break! Had to run from problems (Runs from Amy, Sonic games aren't far apart, Sonic has had many adventures!) And that means that SHADOW is the ALTERNATE version of Sonic, as if Sonic wasn't knuckles only friend (His past self, HIMself!) This was interesting. When you shared this with me on Twitter, I wasn't sure what to expect exactly, but certainly nothing this dark, twisted, and complex. Frankly, if it weren't for the fact that Tomoya Ohtani wrote a blog post on the subject, I wouldn't have believed any of what was said here. It seems a little too detached (purposefully, it seems) from what actually happens in the game. As to whether that makes this "the best video game story ever told" as that one comment you mentioned suggested, I'm going to have to disagree. Ohtani's hidden narrative is buried too deep and requires a lot of specific knowledge from "the auteur" himself to be truly understood. A good story shouldn't be that difficult to follow, nor leave so much to interpretation that the story could literally he or mean anything. And there's the fact that SA2's plot is quite goofy and clearly not meant to be taken seriously (besides parts of the Last Story segment, I guess). No matter what, I'll never look at the Knuckles rap songs from this game the same way ever again. I'll have to refer people to this video when I review SA2 in a couple months. Honestly, I think that from even a conceptual level, this theory is ridiculous. The songs in Knuckles' stages are not meant to inform us of Knuckles' mental state, but rather to set the mood and describe what Knuckles in doing in each of these places. Not to mention that many of the places Knuckles visits have nearby areas that are visited by other characters, most notably Rouge, who is also searching for the Master Emerald pieces, so these places do exist. Most importantly, nothing about Knuckles' actions or behavior give any indication that he is on drugs or hallucinating at all.
One flaw sonic was introduced before knuckles and knuckles was introduced after sonic not with sonic which means that the characters could be representation of the creators personalities

Since this theory is only covering SA2 then how do you explain the other games he was in and if sonic isn't real then how do you explain sonic 1 and sonic 2.
I think this story can be applied to anyone who takes hallucinatory drugs. After all, The higher you get, the harder you'll fall. The track for Wild Canyon would be the "high" point of the drug with parties and ladies and whatnot. The "fall" would be the track for Pumpkin Hill and Aquatic Mine. The track for Death Chamber would be the "low" point of the song and be nightmarish. Both Meteor Herd and the credits snow level would be two options: Succumb to or Rise from the hallucinations. After you rise from the drug trip like waking up from a bad dream, you have two options: "Reset" or "Eject". Someone make an anti drug campaign off this theory!
Buriki Daioh Yeah but some games more than others, Sonic is supposed to be a simple and fun platformer with a simple plot, but people always try to make the games plot sound way darker than it actually is just to validate why they’re playing it, it’s the same with MLP or something like that
What part of reality is knuckles trying to escape? I like the story you made but, shouldn't there be context? In any good story there's context. Just my take on it.
