Following on from harmonising the major scale to get triad chords, simply add a fourth note to get a 7th chord. This is important for understanding extended chords (Cmaj9) and altered chords (D7b9) which come later with more complex harmony. Once again, this is good for analysing chords in songs and for songwriting/composing.
