His day begins by tending to the cows.
This is Einoshin Inoue. He's 96 years old.
Mr. Inoue was born and raised in Jinseki Kogen, Hiroshima.
He used to grow rice and tobacco leaves, but with the decline in birthrates and the greying of the population,
he wanted to do something to help the dwindling number of farmers tending to Jinseki-gyu cows.
When he was 82, he began his life as a wagyu cattle breeder.

I don't think of it as hard work because I have the determination to do it. To me, it doesn't feel like hard labor.
Mr. Inoue keeps eleven cows on three hectares of land (30,000 square meters). At a competition judging the quality of Japanese Black wagyu beef cattle held in 2013, he earned the highest possible rank.
【Mr. Inoue】
I have to keep trying new things to realize my hopes and my dreams. I have to help put Jinseki on the map,
and follow through with making it famous. I just have to. That's what I think, in my heart of hearts.
He lives in peace now here with the cows. But after WWII, he went through unimaginable suffering and spent his days on the brink of death in a frozen land far from his home in Japan.

Wolves and bears would come down from the mountains and drag the bodies wrapped in blankets away.
I couldn't believe they were going to be eaten by animals. What a wretched end. This is the suffering of the remaining soldiers on the losing side of the war. War is absolutely horrific. If you win, you're part of the Imperial Forces. If you lose, you're a POW and subjected to terrible things.
It's been 77 years since the end of WWII. Freezing temperatures. Starvation. Grueling labor. The death of his comrades. These are memories that remain burned into the back of Mr. Inoue's mind.
男性の１日は牛の世話から始まります。井上栄之進（いのうえ　えいのしん）さん９６歳。生まれも育ちも神石高原町です。
米やタバコの葉を生産していましたが、少子高齢化に伴い、「神石牛」の飼育農家が減少する現状を何とかしたいと、８２歳の時に和牛の繁殖に挑戦しました。

「大変とは思わない。やろうと思う精神がある。しんどいとかは感じません。」
３ヘクタールの土地で１１頭を飼育。２０１３年に開催された黒毛和牛の品質を競う大会では、最高ランクの成績を収めました。
（井上さん）
「我が人生は夢と希望、実現するために挑戦しなければならない。神石の名声を整える。そして実現しなければいけない。やらないといけない。これが私の心にある。」
牛とともに生きる井上さん。しかし第二次世界大戦後、日本から遠く離れた極寒の地で生死をかけた壮絶な日々を送ったといいます。
（井上さん）
「狼や熊が山から出てきて、毛布を咥えて（遺体を）ぶらぶらと。野獣に食われていくんか。情けないこっちゃな。これが戦争に負けた敗残兵の辛さじゃのう。戦争というものは本当に恐ろしいもんじゃ。勝てば官軍負ければ捕虜になって無念な目に合わにゃいけん。」
終戦から７７年。「寒さ」、「飢え」、「重労働」、「仲間の死」。井上さんの脳裏には、焼きついて離れない記憶があります。
