As an employer , I can honestly tell you that the main issue with those from local schools is that they don't know how to present themselves . In the private sector , communication skill and your ability to present your thoughts in a succinct manner (in English ) is very very important . This is the one thing that local grads lack
This is prejudice perception. I know many local grads who can make good presentation in multi-lingual. Talks can bring you where you want to be, but knowledge and skill are what make you sustain.
Look at how the teacher present himself, how can he accept himself being published this way and don’t feel anything wrong about it?! Also, how can the whole production team accept the way their production presented to public?
I never enrol in kindergarten, never have tuition, school in rural area,i have to copy my friend reference book,i learn english thru dictionary n and listen to english boy band.from primary to secondary all gov.school..but at the end ,i end up work at top architecture firm in my state.but i agreed with ur point, most graduate is lack or should i say,too shy to converse in english, but not only local, same goes to private uni.so,it really depend on the person, not from where he/she graduated.
This is a wrong statement. I used my SPM result to enter US 4 years university (not community college/ foundation/a level/additional exams/etc). And I'm not a straight A student as well. Just need to depend on your result too.
Again, from the returns on investment perspective.
Ppl always say a car gets you from A to B, all cars do that.. but still a Proton and a European luxury car.. (assuming you can afford both or it's won from Lucky draw.. ) most ppl will still go for the other one..a Malaysian University or a Foreign University.. The argument is always revolving around cost for SPM and Local Malaysian University.. while the international school students dun talk about Costs, they talk about opportunities.. because to them.. cost isn't an issue since they can already afford it.
Yea, according to the people I knew who used to study in international schools, their parents sent them there primarily for the connection, then the education 😶
To some employers, local graduates, especially Chinese are much better then those from private colleges or universities. The reason is that it is much difficult to get into local universities compared to those privates where you can just pay to get in
It could be the case whereby their parents for some reason have not enough funds to send their children overseas for further studies? There are cases like this and they are stuck in a limbo.
For me, the main difference between these two is the time taken to complete the studies. I'm personally a SPM student, when through STPM and now currently doing goverment U and expecting to be graduated when I am 24. But I had friends who completed their IGCSE when they were 16, done their foundation at 17 and gradutated with a degree when they are 20. Not saying one is better than the other, but if you are sure of what you want when you are young and wish to experience life sooner, IGCSE may be better. But different people have different needs so it really depends.
What Yi Lai mentioned is called a Degree Apprenticeship in the UK, it is the similar to vocational colleges in Malaysia, where you learn plumbing and get plumbing certification for example. The distinction being the apprenticeship being in more "professional" areas for example, a civil engineering apprentice. The benefits for companies are that they get to develop their incoming workforce with skills they need at an early stage, and the they also secure their future workforce where the apprentice is expected to continue on at the company. Apprentices benefits by getting a fully paid for university degree on top of securing a job.
Foreigners can also masuk local U, but they have to pay International fee. If Malayisan wanna masuk local U without SPM, you have to pay International fee also (no subsidy). That's all.
Very good forum for a great issues concerning our education system! Cheers to both of you for conducting such a forum, keep it up and will be your loyal supporter always!
I understand that mastering English is 1 of the reasons why their parents send them to international school but they can still master it by studying at local school while attending intensive English classes offered by renowned language centres like Cambridge. It's a much cheaper alternative in the long run. Anyway, I urge all students to master this language coz if u can't speak at least passable English, u won't be able to perform well during job interviews due to lack of confidence in future. And even if u did pass the interview, would u have the confidence to do numerous presentations or sharing yr ideas during the meeting? I see a lot of working adults struggle with it right now.
Personally, I went to a Chinese primary school for 6 years, then SMK for another 5 years with an SPM certificate. My parents were both English-educated and couldn't afford international school fees, although they'd like me to experience more and meet internationally-minded people. Not gonna lie; my father preferred me to go to an international school if he had the means to send me and my sister to take IGCSE. Nevertheless, because I learned languages faster and spoke English with my parents growing up, it's easier for me to attend A-levels and law school without struggling too much in learning in British English. I could've benefitted WAY WAY MORE from the international exposure and the facilities, plus the teaching methods international schools would've given based on my limited knowledge. Hey, you can always take the initiative to learn independently if you're a local school student. Sure, we don't get a lot of the opportunities and privileges of international school students, but I think it grounded me in reality with my friends who are of similar middle working-class backgrounds.
那是一个 system to separate the ELITES and commoners. Higher PROBABILITIES to establish TIES/connection with the High NET WORTH families or Royal families. Best example: Jho Low.
For the vast majority of the time, the main reasons for putting children in expensive schools is brand name and networking opportunities. Listen to a comment made by Conan O'Brien. He went to Harvard. What did he say about Harvard? "Not much different from other university's, but a lot of wealthy families". As you step into society, you also realize that brand name plays a very important role for stepping foot into prestigious careers, and as you advance in your professional life, you realize it's less about what you know, but more about who you know.
Interesting topic and good points raised up. Note to BBK in the future: 1. Please have ALL YOUR MALE GUESTS TO SIT PROPERLY with closed leg position. This suggestion should be obligatory to all of your male guests. Seriously, It is disappointing to see a male school teacher sitting like that during the interview. Very uncultured and disrespectful. 2. So far all the female guests featured know how to sit properly 👍 But in the future, for your female guests who wear short skirts, it is good to provide a blanket cover for their modesty when they sit down. Even Korean talk shows they offer this for all of their female guests they interview.
