well done i wouldn't say it's so spectacular compared to other performances but being a musician and firstly a drummer myself i understand the difficulty in maintaining a beat! AND MAKING IT CREATIVE great performance look forward to hearing more!
Funny thing in this they went through most basic testings a couple of times with Koot Fa Tau variations. Part of the yelling bits are what we call Hua Gu, you can play with three or five (9) Chits or shouts. SAR PING REPRESENT!
If I am not mistaken.... this was an event in Putra Stadium Bukit Jalil back in 2002... it was an international competition for both northern and southern lion dances... as well as dragon dance.... I attended it... remembered this performance... it was before the prize giving...
This is not very recent. Sifu has hair in this clip, He is playing the Gong on SiGung's left. You can see how it has developed too, Both Sigung and Sifu play a bit differently now. Its funny, Sigung plays right hand dominant, I used to too, but Sifu makes us play left hand dominant for balance, I havent asked but maybe Sigung is left handed.
Sifu Chan was my drumming coach many years ago..always like his drumming. The drum was fantastic, deep bass.Nowadays drums dun sound that good.Esp the white skinned ones, it got a plastic, tin can feeling...
so happy and surprise when saw this video... he use to be my mentor last time when i join lion dance last time at west coast cc. he is the one who teach us. been quite some years laio he still so powerful. Bro who down load this video can teach me is he still teaching? feel likejoiningback again
Can someone please explain to me the history of this new hok san "sar ping" family drumming style. I know everyone uses it npw and its purpose was to modify the traditional drumming to fit the jong competitions right? Am I missing any other key details? How many other Hok San drumming styles are there besides the famous Sar Ping stlye?
Sigung is Sifus Sifu (Master of Master) so he is my teachers teacher.. Like my Lion Dance Grandfather.. If that makes sense. Sar Ping is our family name. It is considered a style, a branch of Hok San, the most famous one.. Everyone uses our music and steps etc,.
Hey. I have a drum that is loose and cold. The beats sound a little off. Have any tips? I found a tip saying to put it in the sun for 2 days. If it works, I have a question. If you put it out for 2 days, do you leave it overnight, or, leave it in the sun then bring it back in and bring it back out tommorow. Reply back. PLEASE.
@donyap82 Hi,you are from West Coast CC too?Haha, yea,he is still teaching lion dance, but not at West Coast CC already. The current coach is Master Wong Soon Poi,my shifu.I think he coaches West Coast CC until around 2001 or 2002.You are from the 1990s batch?
cold weather or rainy weather , some little OFFTOPIC TIPS, get some old news paper , burn under the drum , or let it down the sun that might works too ! :D Hope this 2cen tips work for ya !
I have a suggestion for sifu, if he dropped the drumstick again, just throw the other one away and use the bear hand to finish the rest of show. I think ppl might not know he got an accident.
Yeah, in Chinese tradition the sound of drums during Chinese New Year will frighten off devils and bad fortune. It seems like tradition is getting further and further away from us as time goes by...sad.
