This is a cab view of the JR Chuo Main Line (West Line), which connects Tokyo and Nagoya through the mountainous area, from Minami Kiso Station to Agematsu Station.
This line was planned as one of the main lines connecting the east and west of Japan, but it has not developed as much as the Tokaido Line, which runs along the coast, and there are no direct trains between Tokyo and Nagoya. Instead, the line connects Tokyo and Nagano on the east side (commonly known as the Chuo East Line) and Nagoya and Nagano on the west side (commonly known as the Chuo West Line), with Shiojiri Station, which is almost in the middle of the line, as the boundary.
Most of the Chuo West Line was built in the narrow and long Kiso Valley, and the tracks meander along the Kiso River that carved the valley. It is a long distance, and express trains are operated, but the feel is that of a long local line.
In this video, I recorded a cab view from Minami Kiso Station to Agematsu Station along the way. The Chuo West Line is the section that has the most authentic feel.
In his novel, the author Toson Shimazaki described this region as "Kiso Road, all in the mountains." Kiso Road is an old road built in the valley where the Chuo-Nishi Line now runs. You can feel the atmosphere even in the cab view. Photographed in August 2024.
