二月二, the second day of February in the Chinese lunar calendar is special for two groups of people: barbers and anyone with hair. That's because today is the luckiest day of the year to get a haircut! Why? Well... in Chinese culture it's traditionally believed that to get a haircut on this day is auspicious.
That's because the star Spica shines in the sky on this night, which is one star amongst seven that make up the “Oriental Cānglóng” (Chinese Loong Dragon) constellation. It's only Spica that is in view during this time, while the other 6 stars that form the body remain hidden. And so the ancient Chinese coined the name 龙抬头 which literally translates as the "Loong (Chinese dragon) raises its head".
I decided to experience it for myself this year, so I went to a really traditional Chinese barber shop in Suzhou, Jiangsu. The haircut was great but the massage felt more like a body scrub haha.
