Walking the plank walk at Mount Hua (Hua Shan) located near the city of Huayin in Shaanxi province, about 120 kilometres east of Xi'an, China. This video was taken in May 2014.
@@bogart5131 many great architectures in China were built many hundreds years ago. Magnificent Daming palace was built a thousand years ago during the Tang dynasty, Great Wall of China was before that. First canals in the world were also built by Chinese during the Sui dynasty. 400 years old structures are everywhere in China.
I climbed this mountain in 1996 on foot without using special safety equipment except for the tough metal chains everywhere there. It's not so scary as long as you don't always look down at the cliff... And there were some old local men climbing up and down very swiftly with baskets full of goods /food on their back! We climbed up to the top overnight, saw the sunrise without sleeping, and went down still on foot through less steep but much longer way. It was an amazing, really exhausting but unforgettable experience. I am over 40 now so that will be the precious memory of my past youth.
Did this very plank walk in the summer of 1991. And there was only the chain to hold on to. No safety line, nothing. I almost fainted. And I did the plank walk in the morning, after going up the mountain all night from the railway station, where we had arrived in the evening. It was a day I will never forget.
@@Voltomess I assure you, it was as I stated. It was horrifying. More than one time I thought I would die. After that experience, I developed fear of height, and was unable to climb on ladders more than, say, two meters high for quite some time. I almost could not complete work in my house because of the massive fear of height I developed after that plank walk. Only during the last ten years, that fear became less intense. I just checked my archive and found two slides from our trip in 1991. They clearly show that there is no saftety line, just the chain. I will digitize them with my macro lens and send them to you. I just need your e-mail address.
But did anyone tell you to do this under such conditions...I would never do such stupid thing. I do not need this type of adrenaline. For me safe walks in Mountains and on sea sides are enough. If people need such challenge it’s fine, but don’t complain.
@@judykraska400 Judy, in fact, I did not know what was awaiting me. All I knew was that we were going to see some holy (?) chinese signs carved into stone. When began descending that ladder, the slope was gentle. After a few meters, I turned around and stared into the abyss. I could not revert, and thought, well, it can't get any worse. But worse it got. Generally, I do not take risks. This whole thing came as a complete surprise. I acquired a fear of heights as a result of this traumatic experience. Only now, after over 30 years, I can climb a ladder to heights exceeding, say, two and a half meters.
How crazy is the fact that it is actually a two-way walk!!! And people passing each other going the opposite directions, it's unbelievable. I'm so glad I was able to see this from the comfort of my sofa-bed (because I would never dare go there myself), thanks for sharing and congrats on your courage!
When I was at Hua Shan in 1979, they didn't provide us with any safety cables. It was a bit scary. But they offered parachutes for a price. I was in college at the time and had barely any money. So I went with no parachute / safety equipment. Good times. Be safe. - Hans from Stuttgart
Well looks like the equipment they provide is flimsy and will not prevent a fall. A persons arms can easily fall through that well worn shoulder strap & cable. So basically everybody is still free climbing up there. I wonder how many deaths have occurred on this trail?
God bless you both you both are such a brave God bless you I enjoyed the blog coz of you two it's not so easy or fun at least you took such an efforts that I really appreciate you both if i was in your place I never go and first of all I'll get running from the site 🤲thanks a lot 🤲🤞✌️👍🤲👏👌🤲
30 years ago when I walked the plank there were no harness. Only safety measure was the chain fixed on the cliff for you to hold. And I made sure I had one hand holding the chain at any time. The guy in front of me was so nonchalant that he held then let go as he walked, since he was carrying one handbag in his left hand. Nerve of steel.
This was built over 700 years ago by a recluse who lived in the moutain. I do not know how well it is maintained but the plank looks pretty old to me. If you talk to the locals they will tell you how many people died falling off the plank. Some were suicides, some were due to snapped chains, some were plain stupid- like taking a selfie.
This road was first built by a taoist He Zhizhen(1212~1299) who was also known as a stonemason. Before the road finished, he had already built over 70 caves to help taoists cultivate. At the end of the road was the cave he lived for avoiding interfere from disciples and government.
@@adityamohanty9474 hhhhh During his time it was Yuan dynasty, a dynasty build by the mongols after they conquered China, so this taoist was avoiding them actually.
Though it must be a great experience to climb that cliff but am amaze by how the workers must have built those chains and iron stairs, wooden planks, stone carve stairs, and those small hollow square box shape to put the feet inside while walking . Big salute to them 👏💐💐
I was wondering about it too. Also wondering was, if those ancient warriors and fugitives seeking refuge, how the hell did they manage to reach the peak or, maybe died b4 reaching the peak.
A chest harness isn’t going to save you, if you fall it will come straight over your arms and head, they should only be used with a sit harness, which ties your waist and thighs in as well.
This adventure is definitely not for bitty hearts like me.These people are really brave to take up such a challenge.By just looking at the video itself is giving me chills!!!
What you say is true but I lived in China and Chinese seem to have a different way of thinking about these things. They fear death but at the same time they don't respect life (even their own) 🤣 It's weird.
I can’t even imagine how many fatalities they must have every year. By the looks of this with two way traffic and many experienced people in a confined space gives me the Hibee jibees
You know what, I'll enjoy the scenery and the mountain from afar, on a flat space where my feet touch the ground and my legs are not shaking... But you do you... 👏
those wood planks have amazing strength, they have been around for a long time, and every day they support weights of hundreds of tourists crossing it.
My gos my heart keep jumping up and down I start to breathe harder my hold body is shaking feel like I am in there with them scare to look down thank you for sharing.
When I went, there was no safety cables, nothing, just planks and a loose cable on the wall for you to hang on. Just three plank wide, some local kids were chasing each other up and down, duck under you .. "excuse me, uncle", and ran by you. When I reach the end, relaxing at the platform, saw three ladies crawl on the planks to reach the platform. I asked them if they are scare, "Of course, but still got to do it". Amazing.
chinese people just make stupid traffic because most of them being tourist in their own place and make this more unsafe to many people..they stupid just make real tourist explore with less traffic so they can go fast and more saftey..you can hear he sya it is more crowded, crowded with who you guess?their own chinese tourist wanna be...
@@celdo84 but the challange is diffrent, mount everest so cold and just a thin air to breath, and this one is normal but they should give more tourist from other country a chance to explore the place rather than local, the cable cant support if more people hanging there..
The 長空棧道(cang kong zhan dao, long sky plank road) according to legends, was built first by a Taoist sage named 賀志真 (He Zhi Zhen) back in Yuan dynasty (1271~1368AD). Of course it has been repaired and modernized many times since then. But He was said to be the first to build it, and the first human to reach the top of Hua Shan.
@@Life-oo2tr This mountain is actually close to the ancient China's capital city, and I mean the great dynasties about 1500-2200 years earlier, and this mountain has played a religious & political part on ancient China. It's steep with about 2000 meters height and there's no record of the 1st one to the summit. However, trust me it must be a lot earlier, and the video here is not on the necessary path of getting summit.
I'm Japanese. I watched your video as a beginner in mountain climbing. I don't understand English because I use a translator. I can't even read comments. I want to tell you. Thank you for the best view. I think mountain climbing is the best sport to connect with people all over the world.
The gentle clinking of the carabiner clips is giving me ASMR vibes, yet the reason for the clips is absolutely terrifying. Interesting juxtaposition. 😂 You couldn’t pay me enough to do this!
Walked this plank in March of 07 no problem. Cake walk and you can do it too! Good luck!.....At the end of this walk is a temple room inside the mountain for prayers and thanks.
У меня лежа на диване голова закружилась! Я восхищаюсь смелостью туристов! А людям,которые постоили эту дорогу мое почтение и поклон! Это удивительно смелые и бесстрашные люди!
Not so Weeaboo You don’t go here to bring that don’t you? Can we just enjoy how amazing this place please? Kuddos to the person who manage to have a view with good quality and a nice weather.
There used a be a small trail that leads to the top and it takes about 4 hrs to do. Now they have a cable car to bring you to the top in minutes. Along the way you can still see the trail carved into stone.
What’s amazing, and think real hard and look really close on this one, if someone falls, these “safety restraints” are likely to not save you. They go around both arms so if you simply slip off an edge and both your arms go flying up….seee ya. The harness will come straight off like someone pulling your shirt off from overhead. These straps don’t go around and between the legs as they should which would fully secure the individual. These are feel good straps. Enjoy that thought for anyone who’s taken this route!
He is a photographer who prints the pictures on the spot. The tourists can collect the pictures on the way back. He should get his money upfront if he is smart
I would nevrrrrr evrrrrrrr try this in my life...sooooo frightng....but Hats off to those who r doing this without any fear...i would definitely faint😨😨😨
You're a so many different things that could happen on this plank walk! For instance, What if somebody Panics and refuses to go any further which then leaves everybody else stranded on Those little ladders for hours or longer and that's just 1 thing that could happen! It is so crazy to me !
That's China for you, no health and safety, no welfare or respect for human lives. It's a terrible country. That would never be allowed here, in a trillion years. It's insane and totally and utterly stupid. Sorry, but anyone who dares to walk it deserves to fall off.
Safety harnesses are provided. Nobody has been killed. Such adventurous trails were developed only about 2 decades ago or less. There are plenty of safe trails. Teams of staff maintain ALL trails in good condition and an entrance fee is charged., Mount Huashan is closed during winter and has been a popular tourist nature destination for centuries. The beautiful scenery is unique
This is how I got to and from school every day as a kid, except it always snowed and I usually had to carry the pizzas and sodas for the football team.
It is the Western mountain of the Five Great mountains of China and has a long history of religious significance. Enjoy a full-day tour to Mount Huashan to see Buddhist and Taoist temples, walk through the mountains and admire the spectacular landscape. Good luck to anyone brave enough to venture up to the top of the mountain. 🇨🇳 Magical experience! (Shan actually means mountain in Mandarin).
💐 Hello 😊 From Chinese (hua) meaning splendid, illustrious, or "flower, blossom". I don't know its true meaning but I do strongly believe Chinese mythology and philosophy. The nature of the earth, the universe and their relationship to each other. Earthly realms and the heavenly ones. It just makes perfect sense. Peace, love and happiness to you always. ❤🙏
