Thank you for visiting my lovely hometown.I was born in Fengyuan but have been living in Europe for 20 years. And additionally I used to live in SA where your cute son has been living with his mom. Watching your trip in Fengyuan just made my mouth watering, especially all the traditional Taiwanese food you have tried. Those are also my favorite food in Fengyuan. And the temple where you were sitting and enjoying the pineapple ice drink was also part of my spiritual seeking spot as I was young. My mom even finally got a baby boy about 49 years ago,my younger brother, after her deeply sincere praying for a year to a great God she believed in.My last visit there was in May this year. I miss my family and city :(
I vote for daily convenience. Being close to public transportation is a huge plus. Especially near the school he needs to attend. You can always save the countryside for weekends and holidays to get away and a change of pace from city life.
My thoughts, Alan: I've watched your videos over the years and can see not only that you care greatly for your son, but that you understand the education system in Taiwan well. My suggestion is that whether you pick city or country, let him attend a regular Taiwanese school. It will be hard, at first, but in the end, he'll be bilingual. This could be a huge advantage for the future!
4:12 "紅麴" is not made from red beans. It is a kind of rice that has been fermented by a specific mold (紅麴菌/Monascus purpureus). It is called "Red yeast rice" in English.Red yeast rice is a traditional food coloring agent in East Asia. It is usually used by grinding red yeast rice into powder or making paste. The surface of Peking duck is coated with red yeast rice sauce. With the advent of modern food dyes, this traditional coloring has become less commonly used and has been transformed into a health food. According to Japanese research, it can reduce blood fat and blood sugar, strengthen liver function, enhance immunity, and is very helpful in lowering cholesterol and avoiding high blood pressure. 14:32 It is mainly pickled and fried, then simmered in vegetable broth for a long time. So this is actually a soup dish, and noodles are not a must. If you're not that hungry, you can just order soup. Some night markets have also sold a version of fried food alone. However, for me, because this fried food was originally used to stew soup stock, the seasoning is very strong and not suitable for eating alone. But for those who like strong flavors, Maybe it's a good fit.
Taiwanese countryside is definitely different than western countryside. Even though some places are branded as countryside, they are still far more convenient and lively compared to that of UK or EU.
I'm very happy and surprised to see you mention my hometown. You're quite close to my house in some ways. I believe that if the school offers bilingual courses, it will help your son adapt more easily to life in Taiwan. There are many bilingual schools in Taichung, though some can be quite expensive. Suburban areas might not offer as many bilingual courses as city schools, and the students' English proficiency might not be high enough to communicate well with William. This is just my opinion for you to consider.
William getting around will be the problem in the sticks. In the city he'll probably be able to travel easily, but out in the countryside, he'll be dependent on you.
That lady at 11:00 got herself one of them fancy e-bikes. First time I used of them I didn't know that it activates once you start peddling and it damn near launched my fatass into traffic
I think it is better to let William decides where to live. Maybe William should come to country side for a short stay to see if he likes there. But have to think about the education problem. So, as you said there is no protect answer, the answer is up to you and William. Those dishes look really delicious! Will have good appetite tonight. Cheers!
I would choose downtown Taichung. Best if it is near his school, an MRT station and a park. If all 3 isn't possible, perhaps pick any 2 out of 3. I am curious about the international English-speaking schools. I know of 2 in Taichung and both of them are expensive. How do you work out the finances as a RU-vidr? I know you can save money by not flying to South Africa to see your son, but it is a small savings compared to tuition.
A tough decision since William's mother lives in SA, and he has spent most his life there, unless of course his mother is also thinking about moving to Taiwan.
Allan, what did you do to lose so much weight? You looks so slim and fit. It's always a debate topic about a better place to live, in city or countryside. I would not say which is better as I was born and raised in countryside of Taichung, not far from Fengyuan. But I get used to live in a city now.
