A cool thing I noticed is the sound design of normal energy shock cannons versus the type 2 shells. The normal shock cannons has that trailing energy sound, whereas the type 2 shells have just the initial blast (for obvious reasons). Thought that was a cool attention to detail!
It all breaks down that in the original 1970s show there was a scene of Yamato back in ww2 with main batteries firing. And just like here, only the initial blast of normal cannon was present.
02:50 - I LOVE how the Shock Cannon beams last JUST long enough that if timed properly, and the barrels and guns are moved in the right way in the few seconds available, the gunners can SYTHE the beams ACROSS a target like a giant ship-grade light saber! (Or Gundam Beam Sabre if you prefer) If the targets are packed in closely enough - like in the Battle of Balun, where the ships were packed in for a fleet review rather than for any tactical reason - then you can hit multiple ships with ONE shock cannon burst across several degrees of arc!
My personal headcanon is that the shock cannons have 2 firing modes aside from the kinetic shells, one is the normal version and the other is a beam like a beam saber or plasma lance
So much improved version here is nice to watch. In retrospect, from the get go, Yamato was audio-visually more sophisticated at the time. That made this anime unparalleled! Unintentionally though!
If you think about it - those sounds MUST have been originally generated on very early musical synthesizers - like the original Moog synths. The point being - those may have been SYNTH sounds - but they were NOT digital! They weren't generated by computer - but by analog controls! 1970s Analog synth effects at their finest! I once got a great laugh at a panel when I mused on those sound effects for the main guns - trying to describe the sound - all I could come up with was - "Sounds like... Liquid Electric DEATH!!" 👍 😂
I remember, when i was a kid, i saw this magnific vidoe of starblazers in a extint Tv Manchete in Brazil That is a wonderfull time in my life. Util today. This is the best serie of spaceship in history. Tnank you the creator os Yamato/Starblazers.
Thre is a LOT of CGI on display here that I do not remember seeing when I watched this show back in the 70's. Has there been some sort of remake or something? I was, admittedly, watching the Americanisized version.
SBY 2199 is a modernised remake/remastering of the original SBY from the 70s, which massively improved on the ship to ship battle choreography and fixes some plot holes such as instead of building SBB Yamato from the original sunken Yamato(which shouldn’t be possible because Yamato was later found to be ripped in two; they didn’t know at that time) they decided to build SBB Yamato from scratch using the sunken Yamato as camouflage.
What exactly was that which we saw at the end? I don't remember seeing that in the series I watched. I can never remember which of them I actually did watch and I don't know which one this is from.
Sure the shock cannons are powerful, but don't the Gamilas ships have shields, I mean that's why the cosmo navy ships couldn't do any damage against them initially. These Gamilas cruisers might as well be fighters, no armor whatsoever
No, the Garmillas ships did not have shields, what they did have was a special coating that allowed them to deflect shots from weak positron cannons, but it was unable to resist shock cannon fire, and these are the weapons used in the Yamato's gun turrets
