To everyone saying "Just use a lathe, duh" - this technique was originally used to make the massive round pillars that held up entire Japanese buildings and temples. Good luck finding a lathe large enough for a column over 60 feet long and 5 feet wide...

The craft is a perfect art. I've learned a lot. I dont think it's possible without a lathe. The planer is so sharp that it slice like a ham cutter. And the marking string and the wood pen. An art needed to preserve. Respect sir

Good old manual labor! A lost art. Keep on keeping it alive. I used this same process on granite with a 4" angle grinder.

It's really amaze me when ever I saw a really talented person in his work u won't believe how many worker in my country don't even knew the worth of thier own hand made pieces for example the maintenance worker of Taj Mahal is the descended of the same family who work there at the time of construction of it and they still use the same methods till now by hand still giving shape of to the stone by hand tools with the accuracy I guess what is good in this is the preservation of both the art and and the artist but I m pretty sure the govt wouldn't even care to recognize their work and pay them respectively

どんなに宮大工になりたくても神様に認められないと宮大工になれないって言われてるよね。 自分家の父親が昔ながらの大工で鉋も糸の墨みたいなものも家にあって懐かしい気持ちで見れました

That's a bit like we do it when working 6 meter 300mm×300mm timbers. Except we rip them down the ink lines with a makita circ saw and we dont have one of those nice shaped planes to finish it. Still get pretty good results though. Nice work.

Ancient painstaking method, but working good for any sizes. Not need heavy machinery and power equipment.

素人の僕が丸い柱を作ろうと考えたら木工旋盤で削るくらいしか考えつかないですが、宮大工の方は手鉋で削って作られてるのですね。 これはとても手間が掛かりますね。 そしてなんとも素晴らし腕前。 感服致します。

I understand how you make the plane fit the round but how did you get the Blade to fit?

How many times did your kanna blade need sharpening during this process?

90% of this is hidden in the radiused plane blades (kanna). They show 10 seconds of the plane being sharpened to the diameter of the wood when in reality its the most critical part of the process.

Is there a special plane for each "standard" size?

even if this technique hides many neat tricks, i wonder if using roughing tools (chisel, saw, etc) to cut corners (roughing), would actually cut down the rime, without cutting down on mastery.

I found this amazing. Never seen round timber made by hand. Is the plane purposely made for making round timber? If so, what are these planes called?

How does one make and sharpen a plane with a curve like that?

While you could lathe this in two minutes, the surface finish you get by plane is way superior I would guess. Shaving it with the grain brings out the real beauty.

What is the string used for marking the workpiece? What is the name, it looks so convenient, but does the ink ( or the black stain) penetrate deep into the wood? Maybe its not good to use when the surface will not be thicknessed or so?

Turning it on a lathe would be too easy I guess

not because it waste of time its because of the skill to do it with one tool in rural world or non power world (1878)

Можно использовать токарный станок, можно купить готовый столб в магазине... Да многое можно. Но представить как без современного оборудования когда-то мастер делал работу, которую сегодня не могут так красиво сделать на токарном станке. Так что мы видим руку настоящего мастера. Это, конечно, моё мнение.
