〔大海／La mer〕是德布西最大的一部交響樂作品, １９０５年在巴黎首演 但並不受好評, 很快就成為德布西最被喜愛與演奏的管弦樂曲之一, 據聞從日本浮世繪大師葛飾北齋名畫〔神奈川沖浪裡〕得到靈感.
由三部不同樂章內容組成, 但三者之間又有內在聯繫,它表現大海的景色與動態性格, 並通過整個樂隊不同音區,強烈表現出大海中各種景象, 樂曲在時間與空間上給人完整海的幻想, 德布西並非標題音樂家, 〔大海〕是他回憶中沉澱的海洋景象, 而非寫實.
