For anyone curious, that stuff that he was painting on from the pot that was in the boiling water was likely wax. Glaze (the paint used on ceramics) doesn't stick to wax, so by painting part of your pieces with wax you can then rub the glaze off very easily later.
Such beauty! The Japanese are a wonderful, creative people, with a history that stretches back so far most of us cannot fathom it. The techniques and beauty they bring with that history is truly incredible. Thank you so much for sharing these little glimpses of their genius with us.
