When the PRC say we are all Chinese , they are referring to the Han ethnic group. As for Singaporean guys , we swore our alliance to Singapore not PRC. We defend the sovereignty of Singapore not People Republic of China.
If that is what they meant, it is all fine and dandy. The problem is that now that they are having a trade war with the Americans. Some of them expect us to hate their enemies and won't take polite neutrality for an answer. We won't take their side mean that we are han traitors to them wor. That is practically demanding our allegiance. And it is totally selfish and stupid. When we take their side against the Americans, Filipinos etc etc in whatever disputes they have... and when they hug and make up, you think these "enemies" will forget which side we took? Sorry but if they say we are all 中国人 , I won't accept it. They say we are all 华人 , sure no problem. Race is just shared ancestors and history, nationality on the other hand is defending the interests of our society. I'd rather defend the interests of my Singaporean Indian, Malay brothers than someone whom with I share an ancestor 500 years ago. We need to keep a polite distance in order for kinship and friendship to blossom.
Yes, I always make myself clear when I travel aboard and they said I am Chinese. I will tell that I am NOT from China and Singaporean Chinese. HATED THAT !
The translation of the story title is wrong! The translation : Singaporeans are not Chinese should be translated as Singaporeans are not china citizen! 75% of Singaporeans are chinese!!
如果是洋人问,那我需要说 i am a singaporean chinese。
When I was holidaying in Changmai couple years ago, I had a little altercations with a Chinese older lady, from China. She insisted that Singaporeans, even with mix heritage/parentage, are all Chinese descendant because all Chinese ancestries came from China. So I asked her... I have Malay blood in me, I have Indonesian blood in me, shouldn't I honor those ancestries too? She said, because I look like a Chinese and I got a Chinese surname, so I am Chinese. My loyalty should go back to our motherland. I was pretty shock at the ignorance of this "pink fan"! I'm a 6th generation Singaporean, true and true, of a mix heritage. Shouldn't my loyalty goes to the country where I was born and raise, where I call her home?? You can't just ask me to ignore the other percentages of other races in my DNA! I find this RACE = NATIONALITY is truly ridiculous and absurd! On another note, my husband's Singaporean Eurasian. That lady also insisted he is a Chinese despite having an Irish surname! Totally doesn't align with the points she used to argue her way through with me! 🤦♀
Strength in numbers is what they believe in. They want to identify overseas Chinese as their own to reinforce their belief that they are strong and are exerting influence all over the world. Their need for validation turned them against main stream values. This is why they are being despised in so many area.
That's one crazy woman. She sees anyone who has a Chinese face and thus that person is a 中国人. I always say that in Singapore, one may look Chinese or even is ethnically a Chinese but it doesn't mean that that person can speak Mandarin. The 中国人 can never get around that! We're proud of our differences, that's our strength. We're from different races but we're ONE SINGAPORE!
The correct term is ethnic Chinese, Malaysian Chinese, or Singapore Chinese, not Chinese. Saying one is Chinese will often give indigenous locals the impression that we identify with PRCs, and to make things worse, there are many ethnic Chinese who have either been brain-washed or are ignorant enough to believe that being ethnic Chinese means we have to support Chinese superiority.
A true blue Singaporean here. In our multiracial country, we might describe ourselves as Chinese Singaporean, Malay Singaporean, or Indian Singaporean, but the emphasis is always on being Singaporean, with the ethnic adjective (eg. "Chinese" Singaporean) merely describing the race-based subgroup of each local. Most of the time, we just identify as Singaporeans, as that's precisely who we are, our nationality. My loyalty lies solely with my beloved country, Singapore. China is simply another foreign country, and its citizens are thus, foreigners.
😅For all Singaporeans, when we said we are Chinese, we are only refering to our Race as Citizens, NOT our Nationality. Similar to our Malay Citzens and Indian Citizens. We are only refering that they are Malay Race and Indian Race. NOT they are Malaysians or Indians. Singapore as an Independence and Sovereign Country is a Multi Racial, Multi Cultural and Multi Religious Society and Country ❤😊🎉
this 美女 is rather amusing。。besides her good micmicking of an accent。。she is full of vitality & sunny like presence .. would be a very fun (crazy) friend to be around with 。。gratitude for your defence my lady .. 没事儿 Mr. Ye。。
I am a Singapore Hokkien, Singapore Teochew, Singapore Cantonese。
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video. Lots to take away. Chinese, to me, should encompass 56 tribes, and should have more diversity and embrace this diversity than Singapore, but sadly, this is not what the Chinese government sees. Singapore has spent the years since it was independent in 1965 to forge a national identity. I think we have done it reasonably well. We, Singaporeans identity ourselves as Singaporeans first before anything. Even Singaporean Malays are different from Malaysian Malays. We should embrace diversity, which gives us strength and adds a variety of joys to life. Like the way you say "enjoy laksa lah", Singapore has left its mark (a compliment) on you. The banana wrapped stuff is otah - fish with spices and coconut milk wrapped in banana leaf and grilled over charcoal fire, absolutely heavenly.
Colonizer tongue school is to create Half baked britishers Chinese to look down on their own culture, colonizer used language and religion to colonize and subjugate their subjects.
most or all older Singaporeans have already pass on from 1960s , there is no more links with China. which idiot Singaporeans now wants to be a China citizen ?
True , i bump into some of them face to face , some of them are “PR”, some not even PR at all. Some of these peoples are what the chinese call them “反贼” ,anti-ccp or anti-china. they long to become non-chinese but don’t have the ability to migrate.
@your point n. 2 - - - some chinawomen, even when in Japan's convenient store and airport, they barbarously shouted at the convenient store's Japanese worker ". . . . . 你为什么不会说中文。 。 。 ? The same thing happened to the Japanese Immigration Officers at the airport too.
China ≠ CCP, mainland China was just kidnapped by the CCP, and the Chinese people were isolated and brainwashed by the wall built by the CCP.
Why bother with them? Just tell them, I am Singaporean period, end of the discussion. Is speaking Mandarin a must and part of Singapore's constitution law? No, right. Just refused to converse with them in Mandarin, albeit most Singaporeams of chinese ethnicity can speak Mandarin.
I normally don’t watch any video from China but I like your videos and somehow loved them. Thank you so much for speaking up for us. By the way, how long have you ever stayed in my country ?
I worked in Singapore twice. And visited a lot of times. I would say I have lived in Singapore for a couple years. However, because I am pretty open minded and willing to learn new things, I think I learned a lot about the people/culture there while my staying. You need to be open minded otherwise you live in Singapore for 20 years, still know nothing about the local live...
I really like your videos. been watching them for several months. And yes i am a local born Singaporean chinese. But I also love China and its beautiful cultures. Although I do acknowledge my 祖宗is from China.
Must differentiate between Ethnicity and Nationality. The trouble is the name of PRC is China so the people from there are known as Chinese (all 56 ethnicities). So when I am asked I call myself Singaporean of Chinese ethnicity. I refer to people from China..PRC. Not rocket science.
We know we are Chinese, but 华人😊 Just like in Singapore, when we talk about Malay or Indians, we know we are talking about Singapore's Malays and Indians, not Malaysian or India's Indian
3:32 ironically you get Malaysian or Singaporean curry and laksa easily here in Melbourne - which most people would have thought of as an “Ang Moh” place.
Yes our ancestors came over from china, then again there are some that are from Indonesia or Malaysia chinese and from various countries so its not all are from China. Chinese there is a saying 落地生根 our roots are in Singapore. This does not mean we discriminate China or don’t consider ourselves as chinese.
Singapore Mahjong is played like hong kong style, 13 tiles, minimum flower to win or we need BIG TILES to make up the flower. As for CHINESE people classification, we can't classified all look the same must be certain race. Can we say England people is same as Russian and American? Can we say African is same as Indian? Malay and Indonesia and Thai are all the same? All of us already established our own identity so Singaporean is not China citizen. French are french, Pakistani are Pakistani.
Oh yes, I totally agreed with what you just said. Few years ago when I was in Shanghai, shopping and the salesgirl asked when am I from as I can’t communicate well in mandarin . I told here I am from Singapore and She commented that oh Singapore belongs to China and you are Chinese. I got so damn offended and walked out . RUDE And IGNORANT !!!
I would have done the same! Such ignorance! I'm very surprised because I understand that Shanghai is one of the biggest cities and yet the salesgirl could say that?! But I've never been to China except to Hong Kong and Macau.
Is a matter of country identity, the citizen of a country. Race cannot be used to identify the individual origin and citizenship. ❤
台独不承认他们是Chinese,但是新加坡人没有那么敏感,we are Chinese, we are from Singapore.
It is important to separate ethnicity and citizenship. And it is also important to understand one should not force one's sense of identity on others. Again, it comes down to inclusivity, and the ability to embrace diversity and plurality.
If someone were to say to me that I'm not 华, then that's where I would correct them and tell them I indeed am. To be honest, for me, if someone were to ask me "Are you Chinese?" I'd say, "Yes, Singaporean Chinese". Because (going beyond politics), I do see myself as BOTH, rather than an "Either or". I feel the kinship. With different citizenship, naturally when it comes to state, certain interests and responsibilities will be different. But when there is no conflict in those, my heart and soul is Chinese. When China does well and prospers, does good and makes the world a better place for humanity, I also feel the joy inside. Same as when my Singaporean Indian compatriot experiences good developments and pride with India, I would expect them to feel that joy too.
I don't discriminate anyone specifically.... I discriminate everyone equally. I am fair. Actually, discrimination based on ethnicity and skin tone is pretty stupid. Good or bad, we are all humans.
James, buzz me when you revisit singapore…I wish to be your friend. I do speak mandarin though not fluent and structured. I’m sinkabolean 😁…but I’m very much immersed into China’s Chinese culture for exchange and tourism 😙😊

Singaporeans who are of ethnic Chinese race - they are Singaporean Chinese. They do respect their ancestors who originated from China long ago. They never said they are not of Chinese race (ethnicity). They are simply telling you that they are not citizens of People's Republic of China. They are citizens of Singapore. Singaporeans are by choice, not politically Communists. Singapore is not a Communist country.
😂 If the local Singaporeans are speaking in their Southern Chinese dialects, we're habitually refer ourselves as "Tang people" not even "Hua" ethnicities (I'm referring to the 3 most common dialects Hokkien aka Minnan, Teochew aka Chiuchaw & Cantonese ).😂
