脊椎支架植入手術是從脊椎水球骨折復位手術改良而出現的手術。水球骨折復位手術其中一個缺點是水球收縮後，注入骨水泥(bone cement)前，脊骨因沒有支撐，可能會局部縮小，減低應有的擴張脊骨的效果。
跟水球骨折復位手術基本相同。但在水球外加一個金屬網狀支架。當水球被打漲時支架擴張支撐脊骨，水球收縮後支架留下，繼續支撐脊骨。最後，醫生會沿著導管注入骨水泥，填滿脊骨內的空間。骨水泥凝固後，脊骨骨折便修復。這樣擴張脊骨的效果更好。
