As a Han people, I use “汉语(Hànyǔ) ” to non-Han people: 你会说汉语吗？（Can you sepeak Hànyǔ ? ） As a Chinese, I use "中文(Zhōngwén)" to non-Chinese people: 你会说中文吗？（Can you speak Zhōngwén ? ） As a...normal people from somewhere in China, I use 普通话(Pǔtōnghuà) to people from other places of China: 你会说普通话吗？（Can you speak Pǔtōnghuà ? ） But for FOREIGN learners, yes they are the same.

Thank you for making this video and clearing this up. Since I started learning, this has been a big question and debate. I have even watched videos on other channels where the "teacher" says that native speakers never use 汉语。I knew that could not be true because my native teachers use it, my husband uses it and this channel does. I was always extremely confused, not by the meaning, but by why or when to use either one. I know what each term means, it's just frustrating when you have one person saying one thing and another completely contradicting it. I will always follow what my teacher says and everything I learn here on Everyday Chinese. This channel and the website have the most consistent and comprehensive learning material. Thank you! 🙂❤

Another scenario for 汉语: When we are talking about different ethnic groups in China, we say 汉语 instead of 中文。 And some more knowledge about 普通话 and Mandarin: More precisely speaking, Mandarin is a group of dialects mostly spoken in northern China, Putonghua is a dialect of Mandarin. Many mandarin dialects sound very different. The main differences lie in tone and vocabulary. In linguistics, Mandarin is called 官话.

I like to use 官話 for Mandarin, but almost nobody uses that word. It’s the most precise word for the Mandarin language. I think it should be used more. 普通話 is the standardized Mandarin used in the PRC. In fact, the standardized Mandarin in the ROC (Taiwan) is different from 普通話, and it’s called 國語. Both are 官話, but they are two variations of 官話. As a learner of Mandarin, I find it very important for me to make clear to myself and to others exactly what I am trying to learn. I want my spoken and written Mandarin to be understandable to any native speaker of Mandarin, and I want to understand the speech and writing of any native speaker of Mandarin. So, I wish to speak something similar to 普通話 and 國語, but not identical to either of them. The language I am learning is not 中文 or 漢語 or 普通話 or 國語, it is 官話. 官話 is a language. It is narrower than 中文 or 漢語 (a group of many languages, falsely labeled as one language by the Communist Party) and broader than 普通話 or 國語 or any specific regional dialect of Mandarin (there are many dialects of Mandarin). The language I study is 官話.

是的。广东话=粤语。粤 is a short term referring to 广东. For vehicles registered in 广东，the first character on their plates is 粤。The traditional Cantonese opera is called 粤剧。
cantonese isn't a dialect. it's recognized a different language. it's not mutually intelligible with mandarin chinese. the difference is probably similar to that between spanish and portuguese.

If you want to say "I'm a Chinese person", you can say 我是中国人, or 我是华人 if you think 中国人 connects to much to nationality. If you want to say "I'm a person of ethnic Han", then you can say 我是汉族/我是汉族人。汉人 is an old term used in ancient China.

The only standard name is 中華民國國語 Republic of China's National Language, the language of educated people, "漢語" is just a spoken rough language of uneducated peasants and workers
