AS always I'm trying to show you something about China you may not know.
Today's focus is China's Public Toilet sanitary and how it stacks up to where you live.
We will look at multiple random locations and along the way I will add some commentary about things you might not know about Chinese life.
You will find in modern China most cities are kept extremely clean to provide a pleasant environment for locals and visitors alike.

I haven't been back to China in quite a number of years, but it seems to improve drastically every year. The west reports the opposite about China while conditions degrade in our own countries.

The only place for relief was the McDonald's. China's public convenience facility rises with its economic development. The toilet paper used in Asia (and many other parts of the world) is different v.s. ones in the U.S. toilet paper in the United States has to dissolve, to a certain level, in water. While in many other parts of the world, toilet papers are more fibrous and does not fall apart in water. Resulting in frequent plumbing problems. When flushed down the toilet.

Been living in China for 13 years now and the worst toilets I have come across were in Xinjiang. I was travelling from Kashgar to Hotan by coach. We stopped at a road junction were there were a few shops so we could stretch our legs. The toilets were on the other side of the road where there was a small stream. A rickety wooden construction had been erected over the stream. There were cubicles and inside them was just a hole that just went straight into the stream. I still wonder why they bothered building it at all, why not just go directly into the stream.

Once, in Guangzhuo, I went past 5 cubicles and no-one had flushed any of them. Not sure if the motorway service public conveniences have improved? When I was last in China they had a star rating system that on the entrance to the toilet there were 1 - 5 stars at the entrance. Apparently a one star is pretty much a squat toilet but no toilet paper up to a 5 star which is a combination of european and squat toilet with toilet paper etc.

Yes of course in rural locations , small towns or lower tier cities the cleanliness could be very different , from my experience most tier 2 cities and above are very clean. To gain a higher tier the city must tick certain boxes ( higher tier means more money from central Government to further development) In regards to filming , it is very common here , ie if any delivery is made to a home, business ect and it will be photographed / filmed as proof of delivery if not taken in person. Also many outdoor companies ask there workers to film their work , ie gardener would photo / film after they planted some new flowers, to show it has been done.(maybe save time and money not requiring a supervisor to later inspect the work ) Even where I live yesterday the ground staff were cleaning in preparation for New years and the community management were filming the finished product. Not sure it could be classed as a human rights issue, regardless the employer has the right to know the job is being done, workers already know if this is required before taking the job. P.S I doubt they film undercover , it is more open than that here.😉

For example, I have seen in several McDonald's, seats surrounding the toilets are occupied by several homeless for the whole day, especially during winter, and without ordering anything. I live in Fujian China. Nowadays, public toilets throughout Fujian province look uniformly like this. Even the larger public toilets have special cleaning staff living in them. But one thing has to note is that Chinese public toilets generally do not provide toilet paper. Chinese Kleenex has a different standard of toughness than toilet paper, which can be flushed directly by water, but Kleenex cannot be thrown down the toilet to prevent clogging. This has confused many foreigners, including the Chinese.
