Having stood for over 100 years, having some damaged parts is inevitable. In order to continue using the material, the damaged part was replaced by joining a new piece using traditional joinery called "Kanawa Tsugi".
It will continue standing strong for another 100 years. That's the hope I put in as I work, the old wood bearing the work of a craftsman from a new period of time, further continuing its long life.
This video is not meant to be a how-to, rather a glimpse into the work we do when restoring old, traditional structures. Both the materials (old and new) are Matsu (Japanese Pine).

I thinks it's great that you have no problem mixing up some modern Makita tools with traditional hand tools. Very outcome oriented approach.

Ingenious. Carpenters everywhere need to see this. We just waste way too much wood.

Just perfect well done impressive to see how the traditional tategu-shi’s back then used great joinery to built traditional houses. ありがとう⛩️🎏🙏🏽

There's something amazing about old wood in how it works so much more consistently. At first, working a 100+ year old pine, for instance, is intimidating but once you really get into it you realize how much more you can rely on it not surprising you. I'll take old wood over new wood every time even though it's almost always more dense.

Eventually, we'll have to if things continue as they are. We should be reusing, but instead we bury things and when the landfill is full, it becomes a golf course or reserve. Wait until archaeologists start excavating today's landfills. They might wonder how we lived in such a garbage laden society.

The word he writes on the wood before cutting is 'Toru' (remove). It's reassuring to see that even master carpenters put reminders on the wood so as not to make mistakes.

How would this timber be oriented for in an horizontal application? Would the wedge be driven from the inside or the outside of the structure?

What do you do with the wood wedge after putting it in? Do you trim it off on both ends and chisel it so that's it's flush with the wood beam? or leave it as is?

Is it possible, to learn this kind of woodwork as a beginner or I must have some basic experience? Also if it is possible, is there a 'beginners pack' of tools, what I can practice?
