Basketry is an art form handed down for thousands of years, over countless generations.
This special episode features three Cherokee National Treasure Basketry artists: Vivian Garner Cottrell, Bessie Russell, and Mike Dart. They will share their journeys in weaving baskets, discuss the role of basketry in our culture, and provide a deep dive into the process of gathering and preparing materials and creating these intricate works of functional art.

How beautiful. I learned how to make a basket at 50 yrs. Old. One granddaughter made one. Want to teach the other 2 granddaughters how to make baskets. Basketry is so traditional and baskets are still so usefull in today's society.

Siyo nigad ❤ Robert Lewis taught me how to make a basic basket at an at-large meeting. I didn’t have to take it to graduate high school and always regretted it. Our required art class in high school was finger braiding, corn husk mats, and rug weaving. Our art teacher wouldn’t let us use dowels for the weaving frame. She made us go out in the woods to find fallen branches that were as straight as possible, and then we had to trim and sand them. We lashed the corners with twine.
