One of the biggest culture shocks I've experienced in the UK is addressing professors by their names. I think this creates a less-hierarchical culture in academia and industry, and that's why many people want to study and work in the UK. There are just too many different titles and expressions to sound polite in Korean haha
2:31 people usually say ‘halmeoni’ to their grandma or an old lady. but I don’t think the girl who said grandma lecturer to her teacher doesn’t mean to be polite or anything haha😅 if she want to be polite she could’ve just called her a ‘teacher’. + And there’s a more polite way to say grandma in Korean. It’s ‘holmeonim’ or ‘yeosanim’ lol idk but I love your podcast! It’s very soothing
The expression, Halmeonie ' , grandma in KOREAN can be used to call your biological grandma or someone seems old enough to be called. But if someone said st like grandma lecture, it could be more likely Korean expression, kkondae mal, which means a boss or a old person who bragging about st back from their old days. Or depending on context, it can be also referred to a wisdom from old people. But deffo not used as title !!
In addition, Koreans commonly use family title such as auntie, sister or mom, as well as using boss and doctor(&Prof) to call someone who they are not acquintined with. On the other hand, if you call someone like ,hey' it could be rude, sometimes even if you say excuse me, doesn't sound natural to korean ppl
