Add some crushed straws on the top of your soil. It will lower the evaporation rate at the beginning. It will also allow moisture to accumulate so that your vegetables will germinate faster. I never use fertilizer to grow anything. I do Fukuoka natural farming. Zero cost.
What's kumuoka natural farming mean? Japanese warior or what? I never use any chemicals for my yard, use natural way like use dead weeds top of soul as mulch then fertilizer later by themselves or fall leaves. All grow fine if not who care, natural selection, strong survive for my next year crops.
