East European Shepherd are not typical German shepherds. They were part of the Russian military breeding programs started in 1930s ,mixing typical German shepherds with Siberian Siberian Laikas, Ovcharkas, and central asian shepherds. Bred to last in the cold and they are the largest ones.
Slow maturing line your lucky, he is exactly what a German shepherd should be, great ball drive, he is a real male , confident, totally into pleasing his master, great focus
Great Shepherd. Sounds like you are doing a great job of socializing your male. I am no expert, but I have had Shepherds for 40 years. Being protective, especially at night, is exactly what I want, and appreciate in the breed. Also my 10 month male puppy is named "Thor". The name "Odin" is great for male Shepherds. Thanks for posting. Also you do a great job of exercising Odin without bothering the neighbors. Neighbors can be a problem.
Social yet aloof, and confident. The good one's "come into their own" right around 2.5 yrs of age. The aggression as well. The way I say it is simply "bad will emerge" and if it's there it will. Which is why it necessary to socialize them well from day 1. Environmental awareness, but not losing complete awareness of the alpha/handler/owner. That's the perfect blend. When they have the inner self-confidence, they don't distract easily and don't consider too much a threat. You definitely have a keeper there sir.
I have the same issue right now. At daylight she is more relaxed then she is wen it is dark. Way more alert on all sort of things. But i keep correcting here and we are now 3-4 weeks since i got here and she changed dramatically in the good way. From pulling like a horse, barking at everyone and anything. She is now relaxed most of the time. It is amazing how smart she is, she learns daily. She is 2,5y aswell.
Odin is so handsome, well behaved, and so smart. You have the best security system at home, which also comes full of love for the family 🐕. His half sister Gigi says hi!
Good information. I love the protectiveness. Nothing beats that German Shepherd glare from across the street. I contacted Icer a couple days ago about getting a puppy in spring of 2022, so stinking excited!!
Just bear in mind that the workingline is no regular dog. To me, this is a the apex of dogs and you must know what you are doing. The prey drive is very high, everything is very intense. Beautiful animal, nothing beats it.
Thank you so much for watching my video. Take your puppy everywhere you go introduce him to new things and new people it will make him the best companion out there.
Well it is a DDR right? Doing the research and my experience with dogs I know what I am getting with a DDR. You have a beautiful dog my friend good luck!
Odin is Beautiful. My gsd male just turned 2 1/2 also. I have noticed his behavior seems to be more protective also at home at night. He is very well trained like your Odin also. He went to the vet a couple of weeks ago and he now weighs 92 pounds but he is all muscle and is very active. We walk daily and take hikes, at least 2 miles a day depending on the weather. He is raw fed too. Just wondering is Odin still intact? My Bear is intact. I know they will gain weight if they get fixed. Mixed feelings about that. Enjoy your videos.
If you're unsure you can always try chemically castrating him, then you can see how the dog will most likely act when permanently castrated. The chemical castration is a chip and will only work for half a year, after that everything goes back to normal and the dog can be used to breed with(similar to IUD for humans).
Yes! I agree Yogi is 2 in a half now and he is bigger now he is 98 pounds . He is very protective and his brother Kylo 1 year ( all black German Shepard) is protective as well . I notice at night and during day they guard our house like the doggy military! Your Odon is such a good boy he loves you and his family he will guard you with his life. German Shepard’s are truly the best . I want my Yogi and Kylo to live healthy and happy for as long as God permits ❤️.
got my czech gsd puppy a few days ago. ive been teaching him to come here, sit, and leave it, but im kinda stuck of what to do next with him. any ideas? thanks. edit: he also occasionally snaps at my face. how could i minimise this?
Great set of videos and wonderful dog. What size is your crate for Oden? Our gsd is growing like a weed and we have to upsize his crate after only having him for less than a month 🙈
I got a 9 week old puppy now. One thing that surprised me was how strong her bite is, she is only teething and playing around, but should I let her teeth on my hand, and fingers, or is that a no, no?
Congratulation on your puppy. I will not let her play with your hands and stuff to bite on because It can build a bad habit. One thing I do with my dog when he was teething is play a lot of tug and war and Also give puppy some toys that he can chew on. Thank you
Ok. Thanks for your help man. Not gonna lie, I kinda did jump into getting one with cold feet. I got a black lab already, and my pup kinda bullies her around, but I did want a German shepherd since I've ever seen them. You have a really handsome boy there btw. Mine is cute as all hell rn but dam, If she ain't a lot of work rn.
Hi, I see you live Condo or Townhouse. Is your HOA not fighting with you about your dog running around without leash in command? My GSD is soon-to-be Diabetic Service Dog, but OLD People hate him work around, even he is on leash & E-Collar.
Do you wait to throw the ball until he looks at you or is he staring at the ball the whole time? You said excitement starts with you. My opinion and my years of dog training would say you do not want to be the source of excitement. You want to be the source of relaxation. I think you’re doing well but I would tweak a few things to really have full control of him especially in situations where he can get protective when you don’t want him to. Watch the whole Dog Whisperer and I think you will appreciate the teachings regarding dog psychology. If you incorporate that, you’re gonna go far. That dog is smart and obedient. Get the training on dog psychology and you’ll see how amazing things will turn. I hope all goes well!
You really love your Odin - that's great to see. What interests me is how a typical day in your life looks like. How do you combine work an Odin? Where do you see the biggest challenges in having your Odin? Thank you and greetings from Germany.
Thank you so much for the amazing question. The first 6 and 8 months were the most difficult. The good thing about my life it’s a my wife and the kids to help out with taking care of odin and take him out for walks and stuff so it’s easy to manage if you’re alone it’s a lot more difficult
See my girl is sweet but my girl at night turns on ! Now the older she is getting older and she is getting way more protective! Now my girl is the same they are 3 before they are full grown ! I want my girl to be gentle and easy going but I idk these dogs have so much protection! The American German shepherd is different! Now my car broke down and she did a 360 man within months ! The problem is there insists and drive are so great ! Do you take him out around people every day ? I need to do this with her but I’m scared too also idk ! But I hav e a lot more work to put in then you have your boy already! I pray 🙏🏻 cause my dog is to not with me ! So idk she use to be like yours dog ! So hopefully i succeed myself ! How do you get him to do that ? But my girls solid black so but i know she is already on guard in a way ! But idk but how do you get him to focus only on you ? Now my girl wont leave my side ! But Odin is Perfect size ! Now he is beautiful and healthy! But not to heavy either
Thank you so much for the question. The leg or spine bending is a genetic problem. The dog has to be DNA tested for the Degenerative Myelopathy disease prior to breeding.
The male East German lines are usually 100lbs and over, and in most cases, they can carry the weight. My GSD weighed 108lbs and he was a little on the skinny side, he could have easily added another 10lbs. but he was always running it off! All the working-class GSDs are interested in is working, and that's why they love playing fetch, they have to have a job to do!
Nein!
A dog like that needs at least a 5 mile walk. It's not just the exercise, it's allowing the dog to see, hear and smell different places. Throwning a ball like that is not proper exercise. Maybe that is something to do with its personality changes.
Hey check out this video see if that helps and if you have anymore questions just let me know. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EkgHn8nAhS4.html
thank you so much for the great question just do your homework and hang out with somebody who has a working like German Shepherd and see if you can handle them.
@@germanshepherddad8588 anytime I have our girl off leash she has an ecollar on her regardless of laws or not. The way I see it, it's insurance and a safety measure for us. Great video👍🏽
Yes. I noticed that too. My female is about 71 #. She eats 2x/day or less when she is not in the mood. She helps herself to green plants in the garden too...periodically. Echinacia and rudbeckia leaves, grasses and tree leaves. Nothing poisonous...I check her out to make sure it's an OK plant. I think they are smart and know what they need. ❤❤
