I wish I had my ex husband sign a prenup. I had substantial real estate investments and thought I was getting married forever and he was going to be the father of my children. Fast forward five years, he cheated and I lost half of everything. When we got married he had the clothes on his back and an old pickup truck. I think a prenup is important for EVERYONE even if it’s protect yourself from who your spouse will be in the future.

How do you build and sustain a career when you have to pick up and move everytime he gets traded? How do you do it when you are expected to be the only present parent most of the time? You are forced into a very narrow set of occupations, you may have to give up whatever career path you were on, who is supposed to compensate for that loss or opportunity cost? I don't know why there should be any shame about shared finances. Or prenups that provide for them in the case of divorce. They are giving up some part of their potential income to help you make yours. Moreover, marriage is one of the most legally significant things people would do. I know it happens because of love. But it is not just a romantic union, it is a legal one. So just going into it without considering that aspect, the impact it could have on you and making a plan/protecting yourself is unwise in my opinion.
