Iona Abbey, Christian Symbolism, Exploring Scotland's History
A short dip into some of the architecture, and symbolism within the stunning Abbey of Iona. The list is not exhaustive, as I do plan another trip to this amazing island, to explore further. Built in 1200AD and completely overhauled in 1938, there are literally hundreds of carvings! I have chosen some of the points of interest that stood out for me, on this, my first visit of many, I imagine.

A long time ago, I tried to do a tapestry of the front of Iona Abbey and the two crosses! What a difficult thing it was to do. In the end, I made my own carving of the crosses, and ended up cross eyed trying to do the absolutely wonderful carving on them! I'd visited Iona many years ago, and found the tranquil peace of the place, out of this world! Thankyou both for the wee video, as you have found the magic and recreated it. I hope that you return soon, and make a longer video or us! I realise that it must be difficult filming, when so many tourists are milling about in the summer months, but I know that you'd do it justice.

Its a visit I want to make when we stay at Oban in September, so I really enjoyed this video. I loved the crosses and the information that went them and inside the Abbey was mind blowing, given when it was built and the things that have happened there over the centuries. The grave slabs were so interesting and good to see they were being preserved, away from the elements now. I look forward to seeing all this myself in person, cheers Alan

i found that wee detail out in derry when i went to the chapels never learned it here my friends took me not even knowing i dont think, maybe one knew when they took me

the oak leaf is a symbol of st columba

The oak leaf in christianity is a symbol of strength and endurance amongst many other attributes. Some believe the christ's cross was made of oak too. But St Columba apparently was a fan of oak trees. Derry folk wear an oak tree on his feast day, as he is the patron saint of Derry.
