David Niven was never knighted/made a 'Sir'. The story is he was offered such by PM Margaret Thatcher if he repaid British taxes owed since he had chosen to live as a so-called 'tax exile' in Switzerland. Apparently he told the British government to 'F O' (and those 2 letters do not stand for 'Foreign Office).
