When anyone asks me about Vancouver I can honestly hand on my heart say, it’s one of the best places I have ever ever visited.
Why?
Quite literally, the atmosphere. Vancouver’s clean air is thanks to it’s really close connection to nature. There are mountains and forests surrounding the City, and the Pacific ocean is right on the cities doorstep. Here the great outdoors isn’t just a place, it’s a way of life. But it’s a modern City waiting to be discovered as well. So in this guide, we’re going to help you make the most of it! We’re going to look at food, money, transport, and a whole lot more, but first let’s get from the airport.
Vancouver International airport is less than 10 miles from Downtown area, and is Canada's second busiest airport, after Toronto Pearson International.
Getting between the airport and the City Centre is relatively straightforward - a 20-minute taxi ride will cost around $45.
Another way into the City is the SkyTrain - it's a bit like London's DLR with driverless carriages, you take the Canada line for half an hour or so, and it costs around $7.
Vancouver has an extensive public transport network, as well as being a really easy place to dive. Here’s what you need to know:
Now it’s not often that we can tell someone to drive a car through a major City, but in Vancouver drive away until your heart's content! We hired a car and cannot recommend it enough. Thanks to the Cities grid system, wide roads with plenty of easy understood signs and generally well-tempered drivers - driving was an absolute doddle! There’s ample parking wherever you go, even at the busy tourist hotspots, not to mention fuel is cheap, and traffic generally wasn’t too bad in our experience.

I can mostly agree with the video except "fuel is cheap" the city fuel price is literally the most expensive in North America.
@HolidayExtrasTravelGuides
@HolidayExtrasTravelGuides 6 лет назад
Hey Kevin, thanks for watching! Perhaps we should have been clearer there, as for us in the UK the fuel prices over in North America seem very cheap compared to what we're used to paying over here. Even Vancouver seemed cheap for us, although we do concede that if you're coming from other parts of the continent it may seem more expensive.
@mahamousa2223
@mahamousa2223 6 лет назад
I can totally understand! Most Canadians tell me Vancouver is very expensive, I think this is something relative, because to me, it is not "as expensive" as I am coming from a country with a higher cost of living!

I've been living in Vancouver for over 11 years and I can't state enough how little of this wonderful city is shown in this video. Even now, many times I feel like a tourist by discovering new places and things to do on a weekly basis. The guide is on point for the things described with one exception: there is no such thing as "very...very cold winters" in Vancouver unless you're visiting from Central Africa.

I live in Vancouver and enjoyed this video. Just a comment about the weather. I'm not sure who your target audience is; but in terms of North American and more specifically Canadian weather, Vancouver has a mild climate. Summer is relatively short with an average temp of 18C with some days getting into the mid 20's. The winter average is 4C to 7C often with grey skies and mist or rain. There is lots of snow in the local mountains just a short drive from the city, but in downtown Vancouver we see snow only once or twice a year, and when it does snow it usually doesn't stick around for more than couple of days. I don't think that really qualifies our weather as long, hot summers and cold, snowy winters. In my opinion, spring is the best time to visit Vancouver. There can be rainy periods, but everything is emerald green and the city is bursting with cherry blossoms and spring flowers. There are also few tourists, so it's very easy to get around and do things.

I think you've got the weather wrong.. We don't have extremely long, cold winters like other parts of Canada so you don't really need to expect much snow.. just a whole bunch of rain haha (hence why everyone calls it Raincouver) but we do get a ton of sun too!

Exactly! Expect RAIN, RAIN, and more RAIN from October to May. Bring clothes to layer, a waterproof jacket, rain-proof shoes or boots, and an umbrella. Hiking in the fall is not usually the best season, as it is often quite rainy and muddy, but September is usually a sunny month. For the best weather, come in July ;-) We do get some snow in the winters, but it doesn't hang around too long, and it could happen any time between December and February. People here are also very bad at driving in the snow, so avoid driving on snow days, if possible.
@zachclaxton7371
@zachclaxton7371 6 лет назад
Vancouver doesn't have very cold winters. The temperature rarely drops into the negatives. The lowest it will get is about -3 to -5˚c on a really cold day in the absolute dead of winter. But it does rain A LOT so bring an umbrella.

PRO TIP: If you don't want to pay for Capilano, go to Lynn Canyon park. Its just like Capilano and you are more able to walk around the forest and you can go the water. To enter the park you must go across a smaller suspension bridge. Also the Toonie and Loonie aren't nicknames, it's the official names.

Great video! Love the trash panda mention, they need some cred now and then. Downtown Vancouver I would not recommend driving in though, parking is pretty bad and it’s not hard to get around on foot or by bicycle. We have a bike share called mobi that has pick up and drop off stations every 3 blocks or so, and it’s pretty cheap for short rides. Additionally there are tons of bike rental shops that can rent you a bike for a few hours, a day, or even a few days. I would definitely recommend that over driving, especially in the summer months. Also we don’t have 4 seasons, we really only have 2. Warm and sunny-ish from May-September, and wet, grey and depressing from October-April with occasional excitement when the trees blow over and knock out power for a few days in November. Oh and if you’re lucky you’ll see 27 snowflakes fall and the entire city will grind to a halt, that’s always fun 🙃

1. Definitely recommend getting a compass card over driving, the transit is really good for Canada, frequent but not always on time 2. For parks check out the UBC botanical Gardens and Nitobi Gardens (like a mini capilano/stanley park and sunyatsen garden) 3. Best brunch is Red Umbrella Cafe on Davie, but Granville Island public market is my favourite place in the entire world 4. Rent/lodging isn't cheap, don't stay downtown tbh, stay either on UBC campus or in a hostel, way more affordable 5. Weather - it's raining constantly from September to April, we don't really get snow, temperatures are really consistent and mild Enjoy :)

Great video! I'm a city native that's also lived in LA, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, and Japan, however something always draws me back home. A couple things to mention: as I know the fuel prices around the world vary heavily, our are outrageous if you look at the history of our gas prices. If you think Sushi at Granville Island market is "the best [you've] had outside of Japan", you should to try to go Robson street and have your mind blown. Last one, Vancouver does not actually have "traditional" seasons, we are a tempered rain forrest so our summers are quite short and our winters are not very cold. Otherwise great video that showcases the most beautiful city in the world :) Thanks guys

7:09, he's wrong there. Vancouver is warmer and cooler than other Canadian cities during winter and summer respectively. Expect mid to high 20 Celsius during summer (30 C+ and locals call it a heatwave), and around -3 C to 5 C during winter. For the winter, it is a "windy" cold, so you will feel it. We also rain a lot, so make sure you pack accordingly. Finally, bring money; Vancouver is not cheap.

This guy got the weather generalization wrong. If he's broadcasting for British audiences, then Vancouver climate is pretty much the same, temperature wise, as the British Isles. The only difference is Vancouver has a distinct wet and dry season unlike a more uniform rain pattern in the UK. That being said, it's even rainier in Vancouver in Winter and there is a typical drought like condition to the summer months. In contrast to this guy saying Vancouver has long hot summers, they are typically warm to rarely hot, with continuous sun and blue skies and very little rain. The season is long and stretches usually well into September. He said winters are cold when in reality both day and night time temperature averages are above freezing. Vancouver has an identical marine winter climate that England has, produced by warm ocean currents. They expect at least some snow almost every year with very few years a century receiving none at all. Vancouver might only experience on average between 2 and 4 "winter" episodes a season which usually only amount to a small dusting or a few centimeters. Once a decade the city will usually get a serious dumping which causes major mayhem. There's only a 10% chance of a white Christmas in Vancouver, so never expect a typical Canadian winter wonderland for the holiday. The nice part is you can experience that with a short trip up to one of the various mountain ski resorts. The old saying goes you can golf in the morning, ski in the afternoon, and sail in the evening. Spring usually starts in February or March depending on the winter and is quite a prolonged season. Spring is usually cool to mild, but because the ground doesn't usually freeze ever too deep or at all, spring flowers can show months before the rest of the country.

@HolidayExtrasTravelGuides 6 лет назад
Hi Lailani, it sounds like the bus might be a good bet if you're staying in Richmond and want to get to Steveston. There's some good info here - vancouver.ca/streets-transportation/visitors-guide-to-public-transit.aspx. Or of course you could hire a car with us and get around the city nice and easily :) - www.holidayextras.co.uk/car-hire.html

I highly recommend bicycling around Richmond (outside of the really dense/skytrain area) and Steveston
@joellagemaat5386
@joellagemaat5386 6 лет назад
If you are staying in Richmond along Cambie or No. 3 Road, the 410 bus goes right into Steveston and comes every 10 minutes or so throughout the day. The fare is inexpensive at $2.75 and takes around 35 minutes. If you’re staying outside of that area, buses run less frequently, but can still get you there easily. Public transit is safe and widely used across the region, and Richmond is one of the safest areas in metro Vancouver. Cycling is also a good way to get around Richmond as it is very flat and there is decent cycling infrastructure. Avoid riding No. 3 Road anywhere north of Granville avenue though, as the bike lanes are narrow and the road is very busy with lots of driveways and other hazards. In general, you can ride around Richmond easily while avoiding most busy streets. Also I would recommend using Google Maps, Google Maps cycling directions are pretty accurate, and Translink (metro Vancouver’s transit company) is partnered with Google Maps so all you have to do is input your destination and select transit as the mode and google will tell you the rest of the way, even showing if the bus is delayed.
@Vanessa-bk4nv
@Vanessa-bk4nv 6 лет назад
Definitely take the bus or a taxi. Drivers in Richmond are often not very aware of their surroundings, so I would not ride a bike, or drive if it was my first time in the city. Although, it depends on what kind of traffic you are used to driving in. A lot of people think Vancouver/lower mainland drivers are extremely aggressive. If you are from a big city, you will be fine, if you are from a smaller town, you might find it stressful to drive here.

With all due respect, one would tip 10-15 percent for average service. 15-18 percent for good or amazing service. If the service you receive is good, which more often than not it will be, please respect that the cost of living in Vancouver is quite high. Servers make a very small wage hourly and rely heavily on tips.

@fraserhenderson7839
@fraserhenderson7839 6 лет назад
Yes, for reasons not made clear, the restaurant industry has contrived to hoodwink the consumer into subsidizing the wages of servers by direct "voluntary" payment. I may tip but not if the server is just "phoning it in". Servers are not forced to do that work. They are not victims of selfish customers. Some restaurants in Vancouver pay wait staff a living wage and forbid tipping.
