Climbing up to the summit of "Cerro de Monserrate" is probably the most popular thing to do in Bogotá, either for tourists or for pilgrims and sportsmen. The climb consists of 1600 steps, the path is pretty steep and quite demanding if you are not used (like me) to climbing.
At the top lies "La Basílica Santuario del Señor Caído", the church of the fallen Lord. Around the church, statues representing the 12 times in which Jesus fell carrying the cross.
The site was sacred even before the Spanish built a sanctuary here. It was a sacred hill for the Muiscas.
Getting to the top is demanding but extremely rewarding.
