The BMW 525it E34 panoramic sunroof service and repair video. Unfortunately, it's really a pain in the butt, so I hope you can glean something useful from it. music - "Lighthouse" by Ghost'n'Ghost
Don't quote me on this, I could be wrong, but I think the padded dashboard tops on all E34s were black so you might be getting that brown coming off because someone has decided to vinyl paint the dashboard top to match the trim colour and the paint is coming off...
Nice beards but is it the British accent or mumbling that makes this video tough to understand :) Cheers for taking the time to remove the headliner to restore the rails.
Hi there ! I just bought one cuz i am a e34 lover, OMG the cockpit is soaked ! I hope the drains are clogged but the fact is i am afraid to open the sunroof lol ! this video it's helpful and the guy it's cool , could you explain a bit more about the switch s functions??
What kind of lube can you use for the wires? My sunroof really struggles halfway and the roof engine get kind of hot, so it obviously works to hard. So I'm gonna try to clean out everything even the wires. But I have no idea what lubricant I should use. I only have lithium grease, and I have herd that that is a big no no because it turns into a paste.
I have a 520i E34 from 95 with the panoramic roof. Since a few months water leaks from the right rear corner onto the right rear seat whenever there's heavy rain. I have alot of condensation in the car ever since (first winter, bought it this year). The ac is not working needs to be fixed. I have no clue how to get this fixed as I'm not a mechanic at all and have no indoor garage. I am willing to spend a few hundred euro's on getting things fixed but I don't know where to get it done. The BMW dealer will be crazy expensive. I also don't know any garage that fixes rubbers on the doors, windows and roof. The condensation on the rear windows is really a pain in the ass and dangerous even when I open my window while driving. If anyone has any advice pls let me know (location the Netherlands).
Hi David! Did the sunroof kept working or failed again? Mine on "vent"/"comfort" mode keeps being misaligned. It opens more on one side. Ad the engines start to skip
Tiago Peralta yes eventually those cables stripped enough to just click as you try to do anything. The only button that has any operation is the center return. Basically my sunroof does not work anymore. Starts with the skipping. That’s the time to lay it to rest.
David I found the solution!! And it's very cheap! www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-3-5-7-Series-MINI-COOPER-Sunroof-Motor-Cog-Wheel-Repair-Gear/162753432623?hash=item25e4dc4c2f:g:uLwAAOSwi0xaCtiO It's the clog wheels! Once you replace them both you're done! I replace mine and I have my sunroof just as new again!!! I'm so happy!
I would have to say, if you're considering buying an E34 touring, don't buy one with the panoramic sunroof, they're a complete liability, the system constantly breaks, they're horrifically prone to leaking and I understand that a lot of the parts specific to that system that are required normally to repair a failed system are no longer made so they're unavailable even from BMW themselves. You're much safer buying one with the standard steel sunroof which shares it's mechanism with the E34 saloon/sedan which hardly ever fail and are easy and cheap to get parts for, or one with no sunroof but air conditioning instead (for European-specification cars, I believe all US-specification cars had air conditioning as standard apart from some very early cars)...
Jamie! I missed your input. I thought you gave up on the channel, or went on holiday. this sunroof still gets stuck in a 90% closed position, as the cables are stripped down some.
David Bello No, I'm still here, I've just been a bit busy lately. Unfortunately the only way to fix that would be to replace the cables entirely which I understand is a pig of a job, and I'm not sure that replacement cables are available any more. Interestingly, it looks like your car is one of the ones that had the sunroof system replaced by BMW judging by the Webasto-branded motor, the panoramic system was the cause of several recalls by BMW but they never really fixed the main problem which was basically that the whole system just wasn't designed sufficiently strongly to work properly for long so the cables wear out, like yours, to the point that the drive gear has nothing to drive on and the system stops working, parts of the mechanism wear out and break and the sunroof panels themselves can twist and warp...
