The only thing I will say, because it may not be a known cultural reference in Great Britain, is that a Saturday night special is a small cheap pistol, and the story involves the main character buying one from a pawnshop. "Don't Cry Joni" was a special song that he saved for the singing debut of his 16 year old daughter Joni Lee, who had been begging her father for a chance to join him on stage. It is a song about a young teenage girl, who very much wants the older boy next door to wait for her to grow up a bit and be her boyfriend. But he can't see it, and won't wait for her. This song was written for his father. Conway hasn’t got a bad song at all but some better than others. You should listen to “The Rose” as well as “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” that he sings with the legendary Loretta Lynn. It’s a great one and is about the two of them’s relationship over the years. You just can’t go wrong with Conway! Love your channel💝

Conway Twitty was one of the great voices of our generation; a pioneer of the Rock n Roll era. To get the young, fresh sound of his voice, I recommend this black and white video of his; "Only Make Believe". I believe this was made around 1960, maybe a little before. He was right there when it all began, then later changed to Country. A true legend!!
My dad passed 3 years ago. My siblings and I played this song over and over. We're in our fifties and it's not easier no matter your age. Having children of my own this song hits so hard. I miss him so much.

I went to see Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn live not long before we lost Conway, and it was a great concert...their opening act was Randy Travis, another GREAT singer.
Conway Twitty was known as the Southern Gentleman, and it was clear to see why. and it is not hard to feel the tears about your own fathers and the relationships. I tear up every time because as my own parent gets older, I often think what do I do when time comes and how I'll handle it. Love all. and Thank you, Conway for a beautiful song.
In 1958 he gave up the music because nothing was happening. But a radio station player his song and people went crazy over it. The station asked him to come and sing it. When he got there people went crazy. The song was It's Only Make Believe. Song the the year. Thank goodness he stayed in the business.
I've known this song since it came out, it's always touched me, but I didn't exactly resonate with it until certain milestones in my life brought it to the forefront of my mind. Then there is this year. On Halloween, I had to call for an ambulance to pick up my dad because he had been coughing, and then suddenly he became REALLY confused. He just turned 80 years old September 18th, my mom JUST turned 78 years old on Oct 20th, and she was the one we were worried about since she is in poor health, has early stage Alzheimer's, and is going deaf. Dad had his issues, but he's a tough old guy, or so we thought. Long story short, he got COVID, and because he was coughing so much and was congested, it lowered the oxygen levels in his blood and to his brain, which is what brought out the confusion and even hallucinations. He thought we lived in a small town near here, we never lived there, we've lived in one place for 46 years. When my mom asked him where his home was, he pointed at her and said, "My home is with you!" Anyway, he was having a lot of problems breathing, and would fight to take his oxygen mask off so much they had to soft restrain him. He went downhill from there, and now is intubated, with tubes in both lungs, he's on dialysis, because toxins in his blood and from his heart is putting strain on his body, and he's on blood thinners and other blood products. He's in a really rough spot now, but he's fighting. My birthday was November 9th, and we couldn't visit him until 10 days after we last saw him, and since my birthday was 10 days after, I really wanted to see him on my birthday. Unfortunately, I didn't see him then. But my mom and I got to see him today! He's improved somewhat, but in a medically induced coma. He reacted to us talking to him, holding his hand, and stroking his head. There is still hope. Anyway, this song popped in into my head, as well as a few others. Hearing them now, and watching your reactions and comments, it's hard but cathartic, and I don't know what I'll do if/when my dad passes away. It's hard to contemplate him being gone, since he's been at my mom's side for so long. They dated for 8 years, after meeting at my grandfather's funeral. When I was on the way, they married, and have been together as husband and wife for 46 years, together for 54 years! They never argued, never raised their voice in anger, they have loved each other from day one. It was very much like Collin Raye's "Love, Me." Which is sort of an actual story between them, as that is how they wrote to each other on cards and etc. It's a rare kind of relationship they have, and one that seems to become more and more rare when you hear about divorce rates, and people breaking up over stupid things. I've been extremely blessed! Hopefully, I can have more time with my dad before it truly is his time. I still don't know what I'll do without him or my mom. I can only hope that I can lead my family well, take care of their wishes, and lead a life that follows their example. That's when I can say "That's my job, that's what I do" and not have to rely on my folks anymore.
I remember an old story about this song is the writer, Gary Burr was afraid it was too long (over 5 minutes) and was trying figure out how to cut a verse. Conway insisted it was perfect and pushed the record company to release it as a single as is. And a classic was born.

This was his last recording after being diagnosed with Alzheimers in his early 70s. He was country and a phenomenal guitar player.

I cry every damn time I hear this song. My Dad was my world... and this played on my ride hoime from his funeral.. damn near killed me burying that man. Thank you for listening to some old country. All the new stuff you have been listening to is ok, but if you want the grit of country music, you have to go back to the old songs. I mean way back. Stars like Conway, Loretta, Tammy Wynette (there is a strong voice for you), Waylon, Willie, George Jones, one of my favorites is Gene Watson. He has a beautiful voice. We lost my dad suddenly to an accident when I was 14 years old in 1973. He has been gone just a couple months shy of 50 years now. His love for my mother, my 5 siblings and I was apparent in every little thing he did, and he was a giant in my eyes. I hope he is proud of us all, I know for sure he has been gently guiding all of us on our individual journeys through our lives. To all the men out there who work so hard to raise their children to be the best possible people…God Bless you all. 💖
This song was "our song" for my dad and me. It basically tells our story... I idolized him as a kid, we fought like cats and dogs when I was a youth (especially when I moved away to try to make it in music), and at the age of 42 I moved back within a few miles. This song came out when I was a teenager and after that, any time I'd ask for his help he'd say, "That's my job." Then when I was 45 he was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer. He was very adamant he didn't want to die in some hospital. Then about 6 months after he was diagnosed I went to his house and found he had fallen and couldn't get up. That night I sent out emails to all my clients saying I was taking a leave of absense, and I moved into his house. I took care of him for the last three months of his life, and he died in his own bed like he wanted. One of the last nights before he died I helped him get to his bed and he grabbed my hand and said how much he loved me and how much he appreciated me coming to help him go through it. I just leaned into his ear and said, "That's my job."
Anyone who has had a daddy not just a father knows the truth that lies within this song. Daddy's do everything for their children to ensure their children have better lives then they had and will do anything to make their children's dreams come true. But more than that they do it with love compassion desire and never count the sacrifices they make to make sure their children live their dreams. That is why this song touches so many.
