We have great coffee because of the Italians. The migrant movement is what made Australia and what made our exceptional coffee culture.

Melbourne originally evolved as the capital of Aust. (Possibly during the gold rush) however as the country grew Sydney attracted more people, business etc. and unofficial competition commenced. The politicians decided to have a purpose built capital. First they chose where it was to be, then held an international competition to select the town planner/ architect whose vision won. It was American Walter Burley Griffin. Canberra is half way between Sydney & Melbourne. It was made a separate territory (Australian Capital Territory - ACT) so that it was no longer part of NSW, to appease Victoria. Melbourne has the largest population of Greek decended people outside of Greece and a good supply of Italians too. Hence the best coffee tag. The place names shared between the UK & Australia would be many, many more than 30%. I've lived all over Australia (RAAF family) and lived in London & travelled the UK. Aust. has towns, cities, rivers etc, that if not named after UK places are named after famous UK people. The pink lakes are caused by pink algae, algal blooms, non harmful. Costs have gone through the roof, most arising from insane energy selection. I enjoy your channel.

When he mentioned Tassie having the cleanest air, it's because it circulates up from Antarctica. I think he is only referring to where people reside so hence not counting Antarctica
@Davo-i1s
@Davo-i1s Год назад
It is called the freshest air in the world because CSIRO have an air monitoring station on the north west coast of Tassie that records the air purity. It is the first landfall for air that has virtually travelled around the world over water so it hasnt picked up any contaniments. How that compares with Antartica I have no idea but I'm sure that the scientists would be monitring it down there as well. They actually bottle the air, analyse it and keep it in storage as future reference to detect any changes.

I’ve lived in both Sydney and Perth. It depends what you are looking for. I prefer Perth to Sydney, I like its more laid back lifestyle, its space, its lack of toll roads, that the only pokies are in the casino and not every pub and club and its friendliness. It’s a very subtle difference but people do seem to look out for each other a bit more, maybe it’s because it’s more like a giant country town that a bustling city. Both states have spectacular but very different scenery. You won’t find anything like the Blue Mountains or the ski fields in WA but there’s nothing like the Pinnacles or the pink lakes in NSW. Perth is certainly isolated, it’s a 15 hour drive just to get to the state border and it’s 23 hours non stop to Adelaide, whereas you can reach either Brisbane or Melbourne in around 10 hours from Sydney. House prices are the biggest difference, my house I had 45 minutes from the Sydney CBD is worth around $1.2M and my Perth house 45 minutes from the CBD is worth $410K and it’s considerably bigger.

It may be the best place on Earth to live. Amazing weather, clean, safe, world-best economy, plenty of well-paid work, stunning beaches, the schools, universities, hospitals and public transport are 1st class, low population density, and property prices aren't insane. Almost every Western Australian will tell you, "Don't tell everyone how good it is here, or they'll all want to move here and ruin it."

Cost of living is out of control here too. I went overseas in Jan/Feb/March, when I came back, the cost of groceries had literally doubled while I was away. Items that cost $1, now cost $2. I missed the slight increases, and got it all at once- was a shock. Funny thing, same thing happened to me with Covid. World was normal, got on a cruise ship- when I got back everyone was isolating, wearing masks, panic buying all the shelves were empty, and food was rationed (one pack of pasta per family etc.), toilet paper was being used as currency. I missed the transition, and just walked into the madness 😂

G'day Mate! Yes Sydney IS bloody expensive for property but the same as the rest of OZ for most other things...That said there are plenty of areas close to Sydney Like here on the "Central Coast" where Gosford is about an hour from Sydney and the property market is way cheaper! My sister and I sold the family home in Sydney and bought a pair of duplexes(Semi-detached) on the Central Coast each with a slightly bigger floor area than the home in Sydney and still had over $350,000 AUSD left over between us...Yes Australia does have the best coffee thanks to the massive waves of Italian, Greek & Turkish migrants over the years...Fun fact Melbourne has the largest Greek population outside of Greece...Cheers!

The Hunter Valley follows with Aberdeen, Maitland, Singleton. Our forebears may have chosen to come here but they wanted to bring home with them. My great, great, great uncle built a house in Hamilton and named it Fettercairn. That was the town in Scotland the family left to come to Australia. In some of the older suburbs of Newcastle houses were often named for the town of origin.

Canberra is halfway between Melbourne and Sydney: Way back when both Sydney and Melbourne vied for Capital of Australia, someone went “That’s it! If you don’t stop fighting I’m going to pull over!” They didnt so voila! Canberra! Every school around Australia does a trip to Canberra - guess it’s so boring it’s safe. Melbourne has THE BEST COFFEE! But that’s it! (The last time I visited Melbourne I was so desperate to get out of there I physically went around every airline open/staffed @ the airport begging to get on another earlier flight to go home). Sydney is great. Brisbane is boring as. Adelaide used to be known as (in comedic circles) the Murder Capital of Australia. Perth is a whole continent away. Darwin Crocs.

I live in Melbourne (now officially the most populated capital city in Australia) and recently returned from a visit with my UK in-laws and was very aware of people around me complaining about a 5p rise in a food item or shrinkage. I felt that Supermarket prices were very cheap and the competition of multiple brands made the price points lower than here in Australia, but, I don’t have any knowledge of UK wage/pension incomes, so I can’t make comparisons about affordability except for the price of petrol which was INSANELY high at around a $1 a litre more while we were there than in Australia. But, when we returned home the prices here had jumped $.40 - 50 cents a litre so it may have been a World wide increase in fuel costs. Home prices can deviate widely in most cities with $100,00’s difference between home prices in any suburb. We do have suburbs or areas in Australia where all home prices are in the $M’s but we are not a nation of people who generally live in economic enclaves so a street with modestly priced homes owned by a truck driver or a nurse or teacher can sit next door to a property worth much more, owned by a bank manager or business owner (my own experience). Also, foreign ownership of housing stock has pushed rental and purchase prices up over the last 10 years making affordability and housing stock availability an issue at the moment. The Government says they are going to fix these issues, but as long as foreign buyers are allowed to purchase property(aka secure their money in Australian bricks and mortar) Australian residents are going to have to come to terms with prices and rents increasing year on year. The fight against inflation has seen home loan rates rising alarmingly for all mortgage holders and there is a lot of pain being experienced in communities all over Australia. We are just crossing our fingers that we avoid a recession, something Australia hasn’t had since the early 1990’s. Overall, I have travelled to most States and Territories and can say that each has it own beauties and challenges. At any time of the year it can be too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry or just perfect. The locals are acclimatised anyway and welcoming to travellers and if you ask someone for assistance they are generally helpful. We have been broken down or had a flat tyre out in the far reaches of NSW and had locals have stopped and offered assistance and even taken us into their home for a cuppa and a sandwich whilst they arranged a tow for us to a town with a dealership mechanic. That’s the essence of Australia, a helping hand when you need it.

The States & Territories are quite different from each other in both climate, cost of living, and environment, so I've always thought this video was an unfair comparison. I spent a long time in the military and lived in most of them. There are good points and bad points in all of them depending on what you're seeking. Yes New South Wales is a state, and Sydney is a large city in the same way London is. I spent quite a bit of time in Darwin and never felt unsafe there. Not every supermarket shuts at 5pm on weekends in Adelaide either. I was born there!

From the Utube reactions I,ve seen half of the people in the US struggle to even name another country so having this level of detailed knowledge about anywhere else in the world would be a pretty unusual trait.. Regardless of how people want to rank them I could still live quite happily in any one of them. We just completed a 15000km around Australia trip with our caravan and we loved every km of it from the vastness of the outback, the never ending coastlines, little country towns and bustling modern cities. Over the last 30 years I have filled 3 passports by travelling, living or working in different countries around the world as yet I havent found one that I would rather call home. .

Because my partner flies to and from his workplace, we often only do shopping once a month (a big shopping haul that usually lasts me all the time he is away from home, and a little of the time when he returns). These large shopping trips a few years ago would typically only cost us about $100 to maybe $150 but NOW, these same shopping trips will cost upwards of $300 or more. I can't stand it. The cost of living has skyrocketed the past few years. Rent as well has gone absolutely insane, the area we live in is very convenient, close to transport and schools and a large shopping centre, but even so, back in 2017 we payed less than $400 per week for our current house. NOW though, all the houses around us are charging upwards of $600 per week, the only reason we have managed to avoid the massive price spike is a special deal we made with the person who owns the house we live in, because our house is very very old and run down, our landlord agreed to a lower rental rate, as long as we took care of the property (because otherwise if we moved out, it would be torn down). (Edit: My partner and I live in Brisbane... the "best city in Australia" supposedly).

Most shops in Adelaide 9pm closing in summer as just before sun set But around 7pm in winter as dark by 5pm this is most major stores and regulated by government on hrs No by stores it's done so smaller area stores mum pop stores are open later on weekends and allow to open earlier This is to allow them to supply and they don't have the issue's with union wage as owner run and have to be under a certain floor size to qualify After this theirs 24 hr fast food and servo with basic home supplies but normally only in a emergency as they stick you on prices Here we enjoy more of work life balance and realise the people working would enjoy time with their families as well Most people have done the bulk of their shopping during the week after work or Saturday morning So no real need to be open and then smaller shops cafes pubs counter meals get the bulk of work on weekends and Friday nights Most people adapt to it quickly once they know and it gives people more family time out together at beach and other venues We don't use shopping as the main attraction and plenty of free stuff to do especially for families

1) Yes, the cost of living has radically increased; 2) Northern Territory may have a high wage, but, it is predominately 'Miners money', therefore the average person is not on this 'high' wage and cannot afford the 'high' prices for everything that goes with this 'high' wage... so high crime follows; 3) Tassie has the cleanest air due to the old forest growth that was fought for, the foresters wanted to take them down - this fight is ongoing; 4) Aussie towns and UK names- we are a colony....; 5) Also part of Aust Capital Territory is Jervis Bay on the coast, so as to have Navy access to water; 6) The reason Sydney or Melbourne are not the Capital is there was a HUGE fight as to who would be the Capital... so A.C.T. was 'born'; 7) Western Aust, make sure you carry extra fuel as it is a long, long. long way between Service Stations (gas stops).

- One of the big cost of living increases has been gas, which is popular here. Gas, at least in the state of Victoria (Melbourne capitol), has gone up 30%. So having first winter nad my place has central gas heating there's been a big difference. I've used it a lot less this winter and capped at lower temp but still the bill was more than last year. The inflation on most of this stuff is 100% price gauging. Coles and Woolworths (our main supermarkets) made record profits and we're paying so much for vegetables. - I go to tassie a lot and I love taking a deep breathe in and out with my first step off the plan. It's some great air aha - Melbourne has a huge Italian diaspora because of massive immigration in the '70s and that's where Melbourne's coffee culture came from. Italians may still scoff at that claim tho. - Australia is also having a huge housing crisis, so Australian can't believe those prices either

Speaking of Australia taking on British names, Victoria and Queensland were both named in honour of Queen Victoria and Melbourne was named after Lord Melbourne who was the first PM during Queen Victoria's reign. NSW and Victoria had a massive argument about where the capital would be, and they decided to make it around half way between the two and created Canberra. Those pink lakes are caused by an algae. They're safe, and there's a couple around Oz.

Canberra was the compromise for the capital city. While Sydney was the oldest settlement (1788), the later upstart settlement of Melbourne (1835) disdained the convict past of Sydney, despite its success by the time of Federation in 1901. The first Parliament was established in Melbourne but eventually the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) was carved out of New South Wales, about midway between Sydney and Melbourne.

If you are English and after that warm weather and beach lifestyle then the two cities I would consider are either Sydney or Perth. Sydney has that big city feel with alot of culture. It's extremely diverse and the food is great, aslong as you go out of the CBD itself. Perth is really warm, it has the most amount of sunny days, it's clean and has nice beaches, aswell as being more affordable than Sydney and Melbourne. In comparison to say other big cities, while Melbourne is nice with good night life and food, it's climate and beaches ain't great at all. And, it is rather expensive. Brisbane is nice, but I don't believe it has the beach lifestyle, unless you go to the Gold Coast. Also work opportunity isn't as great as Sydney. Sydney has over 100 beaches, Perth has around 20, I hear. The weather is good in both. With Perth being abit warmer, however if you travel into Western Syd, it's gets really hot. As hot as Perth. Perth has dry heat, Sydney is humid. So really both places are warm, irrespective if Peth CBD has abit higher temperature. Sydney I think has better walks and national park areas and the blue mountains. Sydney also has the history and the harbour. Perth is a more modern city if your into that. But work opportunities in Syd are better than Perth. Would say that Sydney though not perfect with its high expense and traffic, it still hits the sweet spot. Weather, beaches, nature, work, culture, food. The night life is also not that bad. It use to be better. That is part the reason why Sydney is the most expensive City in Australia.

At least he pronounces place numbers properly. Yes coffees that good but its BECAUSE of the Italians. Canberras a funny place. Its clean scenic well paid with access to plenty of outdoor activities. Great for bringing up families and relatively safe. And great galleries museums and public facilities. Because it was designed and didnt evolve its decentralised doesnt have one major city centre. Theres plenty of fun and nightlife to be had and some great restaurants but theyre scattered, not all in a city central location. So you gotta know and you need a car. It needs better PR and better tourism infrastructure. Tourism is transient so maybe its a good thing for the residents to be able to maintain their quiet lifestyle without being over run by tourism. But many other modern capital cities are the same ie Washington DC, Ottawa Canada because they were built to be the capital city and dont have hundreds of years of history and evolved into it and are great centres of culture history and economy as well.

So that pretty much demonstrates how our cost of living has jumped & forced wirkers into poverty and even hopelessness. WA is the best place to buy atm. Qld, being SOOO much cheaper than both NSW & Vic, we always see many southerners buying up, site unseen. Now Qld is out of control, and WA is the place to go. Issue is that its like a 5hour flight from the east side of Oz.

Canberra is closer to Sydney than Melbourne (282km vs 662km). Despite being landlocked, it has its own harbour (Jervis Bay). One rationale for building Canberra inland (and NOT choosing Sydney or Melbourne) was so it was out of the range of battleship guns (in those days the "ultimate weapon" [before aircraft carriers] ). So, Canberra could not be held hostage by a fleet. Melbourne was founded in 1835 by Batman (John, not Bruce with the cape); gold was discovered in Ballarat in 1851, with 6,000 miners arriving every week. These initial riches explain Melbourne's wide streets.

Kabir. I enjoy watching all your presentations about Australia. A.K.A The Great Southern Land. Yes. Animals can get their fo m of cancer. Much of the Tasmsnuan Deviks population was wiped out by a very aggressive mouth cancer. The climate probably closest to your English climate would be Tasmania. Particularly, southern Tasmania.

Sydney might have seemed like the obvious capital, but not to Melbourne. They became quite rich from the gold rush, their population boomed, and they weren't going to come second to Sydney. So Canberra, the bush capital, was born. Melbourne vs Sydney is tricky. They are quite different. And if we are talking downtown, the Melbourne CBD is bigger than Sydney's, with a larger population. So Melbourne will generally look better on the numbers. When you factor that into the period of lockout laws (1.30am lockouts and 3am last drinks at bars), the "cleaning up" of Kings Cross (Sydney's infamous nightlife district), and then the virus, Sydney's nightlife did take a bit of a beating. I have always been more of an outdoors person though, and Sydney is great for that.

Yes best coffee in Melbourne… a long history of Italian immigrants that built a cafe culture. That’s why Starbucks failed. Melbourne also the largest Greek population outside of Greece. I’ve lived all around Australia, Melbourne has the best restaurant culture and best food in Australia.

Ranking states by an American…. What could go wrong? Inflation is global, Australia is getting hammered like the UK. Don’t take median property price as the entry point into the market. Sydney is the obvious choice for capital….? Melbourne, now hold on a cotton picking minute!! Ok, we’ll make it Canberra. Perth coffee is sooo much better than Melbourne coffee.

The Aboriginal people don't have the jobs that pay the big bucks in NT, hence the crime rate I guess. Cost of living has gone through the roof, energy prices are sky-rocketing and people can't find places to live - same as everywhere it seems.

Of course animals get cancer. Leukemia is pretty common in dogs and cats too. My cat has diabetes and we have to give her 2 shots of insulation a day, she is about 12 years old and it only came up a month ago, so its only been going on a month. I am American by the way, but of course this doesn't change no matter where you are lol.

This video is SO out of date. Shops do NOT close at 5pm on a Saturday in Adelaide. Adelaide and South Australia are one of the best kept secrets. Everyone flocks to the eastern states when there is so much more here. The Festival and Fringe, V8 car races, wineries galore, beautiful Adelaide Hills, the Flinders Ranges, fantastic secluded beaches .... I could go on. Whoever made the video doesn't know what he's talking about.

Sydney has never been the capital of Australia. The first capital of Australia was Melbourne, the first Parliament was convened in Melbourne. It was the capital for 27 years. This caused Sydney to be very unhappy so they agreed to create a new city from nothing and make it the capital. It was also agreed that the new capital would be far enough inland it could not be shelled by a warship. They also agreed to build it half way between Melbourne and Sydney. This is where Sydney got its revenge, they rigged things so that they chose the site of present day Canberra which is 3 hours drive from Sydney and 7.5 hours drive from Melbourne.
