Yeah, I like Roberta Flack's version better, probably because I've heard it so many times over the years -- it's familiar, and this one is different than what I'm accustomed to hearing. But Lauryn Hill's voice is beautiful, I have to admit.

The Fugees were amazing, but Lauryn Hill's solo album was transcendent. Anything off The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is out of this world: Doo-Wop (That Thing); Everything Is Everything; Can't Take My Eyes Off of You. Love your reaction, my friend ☮❤❤

Ok Kabir now that you heard this brilliant cover, you need to hear the original from the 70s by Roberta Flack. You talk about buttery and soulful vocals and one of the iconic masterpieces of all time. Do it man, you will melt.

I remembered back in the days when this rendition came out, it was on repeat, actually rewind the cassette tape over and over. Or just buy the single song in a single song cassette, just turn to the other side of the cassette when the song ended😆

The original recording was by Lori Lieberman in 1972 with the lyrics developed from notes she made on a napkin after a performance of "Empty Chairs" by Don McLean in 1971 at The Troubadour. Roberta Flack recorded her version in 1973 after hearing Lieberman's on a flight from Los Angeles to New York City. Then, in 1996, The Fugees offered their version to a brand new audience and gave it new life, I love all three. 💖

Lauryn Hill was a gem! Beautiful lady with a beautiful voice. My favoWyclef Jean was a member of the Fugees as well. Their song Doo Wop (That Thing) is a song to listen too. It was a fun song with a catchy hook. I loved the Fugees and Lauryn stopped making music too soon in my opinion.

Fun fact Lauren Hill was in Sister Act 2 Kabir watch that movie if you haven't she's very young singing and absolutely. Listen to Roberta Flack the song was originally hers, I think. FANTASTIC

I don’t know if you heard of the movie Sister Act with Whoopi Goldberg. Lauren Hill is in that movie singing as well when she was a bit younger. She then went on to have a very big solo career and then dropped out of show biz and had I think for kids by one of Bob Marley sons.

It was actually written for Laurie Silberman, who came up with the concept after hearing McLean in concert, by Charles Gimbel and Norman Fox, genius songwriters. Roberta definitely took it the next level no doubt. One of my favorite songs ever.

Lauryn hill is amazing !! Legends. She not only sings but she is really a hip hop artist as well. Her solo album one so many Grammys including album of the year which was the first for a hip hop artist.

I love love this song!!! This song and album came out my sophomore year of college! Lots of great memories! I have seen Lauren Hill perform live on Oakland once. In college I worked in a urban/hip hop clothing store in college and one of the clothing lines we briefly sold was called Refugee Camp. It was a clothing line by the Fugees. It' was military inspired with a lot of tan khaki and olive green colors and camp hats and boonie hats and camo.

I can't hear this song without thinking of the movie About A Boy, although that movie predates this version of this song. The boy sang this song in a talent show at school to make his mom happy. It was humiliating for him.

I’ve got a story. When I was in high school, mid 90s, my friend’s friend wrote a horror screenplay back in the late 80s and he let me read it. There was a scene in the script were the main character was working in the garage and started humming a song to himself and it was Killing Me Softly. I was soooo weirded out because the Fugees song was all over the radio at the time so it made sense to have such a popular song show up, BUT this script was written in 1989, long before the song ever came out. I came to find out that The Fugees was a COVER and the Roberta Flack version was already a well known hit lol. So it wasn’t some spooky anachronism at all. It still freaked me out, though lol

I have to put in my vote for now that you've done this listen to the original by Roberta flack from back in the seventies it is amazing although I like the fugees version I did but Roberta flack wrote that song about an actual human being who made her feel just that way when she sat in an audience and listened to him saying that man's name was Don McLean and he wrote American pie.

Roberta Flack didn't write the song, she was not the one who visited Don McLean's concert, she just heard the the original version of the song by Lori Lieberman and she did a cover.

"Fugees" is shortened from the word "Refugees". Two of the members are Haitian and have talked about people in Haiti being refugees and trying to survive. When they started the group, they were trying to survive in the industry and thought of the word as a name.
