I love learning about others and or the “original” when I always thought it was someone else. Kind of like hearing it all over again for the first time. The beat is reggae which I love. My last concert was Ziggy Marley. Lauryn Hill has a beautifully soulful voice. Her only solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is sheer joy. I am glad you did this reaction.

Lori Lieberman was the very first to record this song in 1972. Roberta Flack's version was recorded in 1973 (very popular) and my absolute favorite.

This is of course an all time favorite of mine and Lauryn hill is my all time favorite female artist ❤. Also it’s underrated. Queen of Rap and singing ❤ and everything else it’s hard to believe she is nailing the singing AND the rapping is she not unbelievable . Who can do that ?. When I went to high school this song was an anthem. I fortunately had the amazing fortune to see her perform in Ottawa

This song is about Don Mclean originally.. the original singer of it Lori Lieberman co wrote it after seeing him concert... she sings it so lovely but Roberta took it into the charts a year later.. Lori's didn't make it to charts

God damn, I feel old. I was a year out of college when this album(and this cover) came out. Great rendition. The original was more soft/soulful, whereas this is more funky/soulful. Love them both. Impossible to pick a favorite voice between Flack and Hill.

#NoLimitTwon You should listen to Roberta Flack’s version (the original hit version of this song from the 1970’s). She is the lead vocal. But hers were a more soft, VERY slow, melody. It was played at a lot of weddings in the 70’s. This is one of the very few times where I like the cover better than the original or the original hit version. The Fugees gave this song a little more substance, IMO

Roberta Flack was the originator of Killing Me Softly in the early 70's. It hit #1 and stayed there for five weeks. It was her second top 40 hit as well as her second #1 hit. Her first hit is called The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and it was #1 for four weeks.

Lauren did such a beautiful job with this one. She played in Sister Act2 as well. Her career stalled due to personal things, but I wished she would come back to the main stage with those vocals

She said she “would rather die than have a white person buy her album”, so they didn’t and it ended her high profile career at it’s peak. Her voice is amazing and she was so beautiful. I remember being amazed by this song and her in sister act, and I didn’t even realize it was the same person at the time.

When it comes to the breaking up of Fugees. There's a lot of drama surrounding because Wyclef and Lauryn had a relationship despite Wyclef having a wife and then the bad break up they had leading to conflict that caused the group to split. They reunited after this in the mid 2000s and they're kind of cool with each other now.

The original was done and co-written by a young white lady named Lori Lieberman. Roberta Flack heard Lori's song, she loved it and covered it and has always refused to say Lori's name, pretending that she "couldn't remember it".

The music was composed by Charles Fox, a white guy. The lyrics were written by Norman Gimbel, a white guy. Those lyrics were based on a poem, written by Lori Lieberman, a white lady. The original version was done by Lori Lieberman. This was in 1972, one year before Roberta Flack's cover.
