I was never a "band guy", I played baseball and football. It wasn't till high school and I saw how hard those kids worked that I had to respect them as athletes too. They practiced in 100° heat, ran laps in their uniforms, did push-ups, stood for hours practicing and marching, respect to them

Not sure about the running laps thing, but yes, we did practice for all of August in 100-degree heat, learning the routines and playing the songs until we got them right. The reward? Eternal glory, of course. Plus, the band was co-ed.

@@johnalden5821 high school we ran to the practice field, then ran laps. After that, marched up and down student parking lot that was marked as a football field (made for interesting parking), then practiced the show. Luckily (ha!), our practice was for 7am. However, this was New Orleans, so take that as you will. We could NOT have sheet music (hardly any NOLA h.s. bands did). You were expected to know ALL the songs (even in stands or for Mardi Gras . Concert band was exception) and your steps. And knees up at 90° parallel to ground, toes pointed, and roll down ball. And you better be playing and know your steps. Mardi Gras parades were at least 5 miles & yep, no such thing as tired. Play! But I loved it. I was in best shape and my legs rivaled cheerleaders or track team. Now, under wool uniforms, we had band shirts & you had to wear gym shorts. This was in case you got overheated, you could be undressed . I didn't march in college. Couldn't afford to. Plus, a long story.

So glad you enjoyed that performance, Kabir. I can also appreciate the dedication and commitment it takes to put on a show of that magnitude. I did have a chance to march and play at the high school level. We marched in the Hula Bowl in 1977-78. This was held in the Aloha Stadium just outside of Honolulu. We came from all the Hawaiian Islands. It was an honor to be chosen. We had the best time being housed in one of the dorms and made a lot of friends. Challenging, but so rewarding!

Greetings from Columbus , Ohio , home of the Ohio State Marching Band or as we call it TBDBITL ( The Best Damn Band In The Land ) !!! The stadium holds over 100,000 fans and game day is simply amazing ! The band members work as hard as the athletes and can be challenged for their positions by alternates on a weekly basis. Looking forward to the game this weekend... GO BUCKS !!!

*LONG COMMENT ALERT* I miss the days of band competitions. Not to sound like I'm bragging, but during my four years of high school band, we were rarely scored less than "superior", and if not that, we'd get "excellent". It's known that our city became more well-known because of our band. We were invited to play in The Bahamas during a festival because they wanted us to entertain before my time, they played for the Vikings, and the Saints. While we were in New Orleans for the Saints, it was so hot and the parade seemed to never end, but we made it. We'd sometimes have guitars, a baby grand piano, and whatever else that they thought would help the song and show. It worked! LOL! We weren't as good as Ohio State, but we were pretty high in the rankings, especially for a high school band. Unfortunately, when one of our most successful band directors left, the band members started to dwindle. The year before I entered high school, there were just a little over 200 band members, which wasn't too bad, considering there were three other local high schools with bands, and not just one large school for a rural area. During my three years with him, we had around 160 members because of graduation and some of the other kids thinking the new director couldn't be as good. He was really good and lead us to many high scoring victories! After he left, and we got another director during my senior year, most everyone disliked the new director. He was quite old, quite old-fashioned, rude....just a real pain. He must have known that he wasn't that good because he never entered us in any of the competitions were the other bands were extremely talented. We'd end up in some tiny city or town to compete with tiny bands. Not cool. We'd win, but when you're against tiny bands that you know you can beat, that's not playing fair. Anyway, I'm very thankful for the great times I had back then. @ Kabir Considers You remind me of actor Carl Anthony Payne II who play Cockroach on "The Cosby Show" and Cole on "Martin". I hope that's not offensive because though I don't know what type of person he is, I think he's attractive.

In case anyone hasn't already explained (I didn't see it in the comments so far), I was in band (not Ohio State's, obvs) and can explain the shapes. Each person memorizes a book of moves called "sets" or "dots" which lays out exactly where each person is supposed to be at any given moment during the show. You basically march to spot A, hold until the next move, move to spot B, and so on until the show is done. All while playing cleanly the music you already memorized, maintaining proper body posture, remaining in-step with everyone, watching the drum major, etc. If even one person is slightly out of place, the shape can start to look off and weird and it can ruin the whole effect. Everyone has to be perfect. Where it gets interesting is that some moves are really close and you basically tip-toe over to them, while some make you literally jog across the field to get to them, while still playing and being in-step. Imagine jogging every minute or two while constantly exhaling. It's incredibly fun, but incredibly difficult. EDIT: You should react to Drum Corps bands. It's a whole 'nother level. Try "Blue Devils Space Chords" or "Carolina Crown's Hornline Drops The Hammer in Houston" if you wanna be blown away by the power of massed horn lines.

This is a halftime show done between the first and second halves of a football game. The band that came off of the field at the beginning of the video was the opposing team's band. It is marching band etiquette that the opposing team's band goes first. Unless it is Homecoming, in which case, the home team takes the entire halftime for Homecoming performances and ceremonies.

I was in band through college. I think we didn't schedule a conference opponent for homecoming and the rent a win schools didn't spend money on sending a band. We only practiced three days a week. That meant sometimes you had to learn an extended show in five hours or less.

Then the half time program, then playing after the game . Then matching out of the stadium . Then whole new program for next Saturday having only five days to have it dead spot on without mistakes . It was the most grueling training as a teenager. We had to practice for one month before school started. Meaning our summer break was cut short due to training. Mr. Rosenthal taught us to be professional, multi-task, discipline, and strive for perfection. We were one of the best marching bands in Louisiana. We even marched in Mardi-gras parades. I was in marching band in highschool! You should react to some hbcu marching bands and maybe even some highschool bands as well. Its a completely different vibe! Both are of course equally talented and I enjoy both styles as a band geek 🤓 The feeling of being in the stands and everyone playing their instruments together while the loud music fills your ears while the dance team dances along is such an exhilarating feeling!

Definitely react to some HBCU's!!!! (That stands for "Historically Black Colleges & Universities," btw, for those outside the US.) They put on a completely different flavor of show, & they're always SO GOOD! It's decidedly not my lane as a marshmallow human who didn't attend one to rank them, but I'm sure a search will turn up a few. I don't think it's possible to pick one that *isn't* wildly talented & entertaining.

I’m a Canadian and even our most prestigious universities don’t go as extra as this but I’ve been told that due to not paying their athletes and thus able to profit a ton more that American college stadiums are as decked out if not more than NFL stadiums. Capacity is like 70-85k. For Ohio’s case when they play Michigan (major historical beef between the states not just schools) they go over capacity.

At half time most colleges & universities that have bands usually perform , sometimes both bands if travel is not to far. Growing up I thought the Husky Band was great when on a freezing day the played "Tequila" and stripped to their underwear . The bigger the school the bigger the band thus lots of choices to perform .I think Ohio does have the best band performance.

Yeah marching bands at college games is definitely a thing, however, Ohio state is probably the best. Certainly top 5. The atmosphere at these events are like no other. The association of people and their state or local universities is a great source of pride and the fans are life long and generational. Both of my children attended the Univ of Washington but I attended UCLA so there are ususally some hurt feelings when those schools get together. Lately UW has been eating our lunch at UCLA, but better times are on the horizon. UCLA played its first football game of the season and dominated Hawaii 44-10. And frankly we could have scored 60 on them. We've got some real studs this year. The Ohio State band has some other impressive performances on youtube. I'm looking forward to your reaction to some of those. 😁😁😁😁😁
