and, yes, hundreds go missing in national parks every year you have to bear in mind: some of these parks are HUGE; Adirondack Park in upstate NY is six *million* acres, which is well over 24,000 km²; England is, by comparison, 130,000 km², and they don't have much in the way of safety features, so to speak; if you want to go camping in Denali National Park in January in board shorts and a tank top, ultimately they can't stop you, they can just strongly advise you, and maybe keep an eye out for your corpsicle. also, when people are reported missing, sometimes it's just someone running behind schedule on the trail or getting a little lost, and they're found within 24 hours of being reported; even the people who aren't found alive, most of the time enough remains are found eventually to confirm their fate

Yes, Dennis Martin was a huge deal at the time. We read news stories about his disappearance. SF can use SAR as training. Doesn't have to be a bear, it could be a human wearing a bearskin coat. Esp relevant if the person was a survivalist/mountain man living in the woods. There are way too many stories of kids vanishing in parks.
@Serenity_Dee
@Serenity_Dee 2 года назад
yeah, I meant to say something about that; there are definitely people, mostly white men, living rough in national parks or in the area nearby. park rangers may or may not know of them, because the parks tend to be woefully understaffed. there are also parts of Appalachia where no authority holds sway except for the people that live there. I've heard secondhand stories (so take them with a pinch of salt) about cops that go up the wrong rural road only to find a handful of men carrying shotguns and wearing homemade clothes strongly advising them to turn around and head back down the mountain.

@@returntonature8773 I'm familiar with Missing 411 and there are definitely cases where animal attacks have been improperly eliminated - mountain lions, for example, routinely move the bodies of their kills to store them for later consumption, and if they catch you unawares they can absolutely kill you without a death struggle. They've also been seen increasingly outside their historic range. But I was speaking more broadly, not just Missing 411, in response to the question about the sheer number of disappearances in the parks.

Kabire I know of one area in Maine where 3 policemen went missing when they went camping out in the forest back in the 60's. The thing is that area is a place the locals don't go. They wouldn't even help with the search. When asked why their answer was "No one goes there. It's always been that way. The Native Americans will not go there either." Their camp was found and they were tracked deeper into the woods. Then the tracks they left behind just stopped. The search never found them. There is a vast area in Maine where there is simply, nothing. Aircraft have crashed there and never been found.

Here's the thing: I find it very easy to believe that people go missing mysteriously -- especially in national parks. In my experience, a LOT of people try to go out into wilderness areas that they are completely unprepared for. I have run into hikers on the Appalachian Trail, miles from a trail head, and they ask me, "Hey, where does this trail go?" (Answer: Maine or Georgia, depending on direction). Luckily, all they had to do was turn around and find where they got onto the trail -- hopefully before dark. It is human nature to think you are in control of a situation, when truthfully you have no idea what could happen to you. Several months ago, a young family and their dog were found dead at a campsite in California, and the investigation pointed to heat stroke (they had insufficient water and succumbed to a freak heat wave). If you get dehydrated, or if you get hypothermic (or suffer from heat exhaustion), you can get disoriented very quickly. You think you know where you are, you make some impaired decisions, you panic, you make some additional bad moves, and in fairly short order you are miles off-trail. At that point, you can be a victim of an injury, exposure or lack of water. It does not take much.

In the Appalachians it’s very common for the locals to be taught about “wild men” if you hear whistling, no you don’t, you ignore it. If you hear someone screaming for help in the forest, that’s not a person. And again, you don’t hear it. There are some places where the park rangers won’t go. And people down there don’t even talk about it really. They just act like it doesn’t exist and the amount of tourists that disappear there is incredibly high.

In real life, there isnt always a neat tidy answer to every mystery. A couple of those sounded like predators- bears or large cats. But people get lost all the time- they wander off the trails - crawl into a nook or cranny for shelter and die of exposure- and they seem to vanish. That doesnt mean they were snatched by aliens, or bigfoot- it means they got lost. People create answers to things they cant explain. Yes, our national parks are huge. There's only been a half ass attempt of a database of people missing in national parks. We have around 70 N. Parks, the largest is in Alaska and its a about 20000 sq. miles, Yellowstone is about 3500 sq. miles, The Grand Canyon is around 1900 sq. miles and that's only 3 of the parks. Parts are very thick wooded areas, if I'm not mistaken they arent even all exactly mapped out. The parts that aren't are the really dense parts that are hard to get to.

I dunno about the disappearances, but I'm in the believer camp on Bigfoot. There's a hot spring here where, imo, they watch and follow and mess with people. I've heard them, repetitive pounding noises, been followed, I think, and smelled them -- the smell is pretty specific, musky animal BO and fecal smell, and the smell itself is scary. I don't know why the smell scared me, but it wasn't the existential cold sweats from the smell of rotting death, just a deep fear that made me want to leave quickly. I believe they can growl in a register below our hearing, too, something you can feel which produces a fear response, but can't quite hear unless they want you to. I suspect they know how to manipulate us covertly, push our buttons, make us react the way they want, like a stage magician or ninja. I suspect they're more intelligent than just an animal, yet still fully wild. Hard to say, but encounters seem way more common than sightings.

my only argument is story number 3... and correct me if I'm wrong or misheard something but... snow doesn't just start off at 7 ft... it has to first build up henceforth, it begins to snow... more than likely whatever happened he wasn't expecting such a terrible storm to come in and therefore probably walks with little issue in the beginning at least half the distance from where his body was found... perhaps he set up camp, and then something happened. he went to go relieve himself and got lost in the snow storm, decided to attempt to find his way back to the road to see if he could find help, or something similar that drove him away from his campsite... eventually walking long enough and having hypothermia set in he stripped his clothes off except for his pants socks and boots, and then proceeded to take his final seat upon the log... clearly if there was nothing left but bones that means that his body was there for a very long time, long enough to deteriorate his remains to bone. eventually nature takes hold and the body deteriorates enough in which the skull falls free and rolls away from the body since it has the smallest point of failure, the neck. but if let's say an animal got to the body before it fully rotted it would pull from one side or the other since the body would be draped over a log. in this case clearly it went for the upper half. but an animal more than likely would have to be starving to eat a rotting body not including scavengers. they have evolved to be like that too avoid disease. but that would explain why the upper half is missing but not the lower half. because the animal that was starving ate it and more than likely it died a short time later, and no other animal was willing to touch the carcass. but in the end the only odd thing would be that the skull remains and the torso is missing... but then again the skull would have had less meat on it, for the lack of better words, so by the time the corpse was already rotting and then found by the animal the head more than likely would have rotted and fell off already. most anything edible gone... in the end story 3 is fairly explainable so long as one has a basic knowledge of biology, weather, physics, and the eating habits of animals.

I live in the Northern area of Minnesota towards a small town called Grand Marais and every single year at least 20 or 30 people go missing in The Boundary Waters in the Superior National Forest in Northern Minnesota. People blame it on the big ass terrifying Timberwolves or the massive grizzly bears that we have. But me and the local Native Americans no it's not the Timberwolves or the Bears. It's Wendigo! They are thousand times faster than a vampire and a thousand times stronger than a werewolf with the intelligence of a creature that's been around for millennia. In the Utah area of the United States they're most commonly referred to as skinwalkers because the windigo inhabit a human being and allows it to transform and shapeshift into a terrifying creature like Wendigo or a creature similar to a ghoul a vicious humanoid fast skinny bloodthirsty. The reason why they go mission is because the windigo eats you hole. Your body nourishes wendigos body and your soul nourishes the windigo spirit. in the Pacific Northwest like Washington and Oregon in the great rainforest they also have Wendigo and skinwalkers which they say are fledgling wendigos. There are old old things that live deep inside of our forest and they do not want to be disturbed by the likes of us by any means necessary. That's why hundreds of people go missing every single year in our forest. Rule-of-thumb here is you don't travel anywhere in the forest alone or without a gun and a big sharp knife and a reliable compass.

I would think if you were with others and in a split second they are gone, if they see a wild animal or attacked, would one hear you call for help or the sounds of struggle. The man with the crew, I wonder if he did not excuse himself to use the bathroom further away behind some trees and then he was attacked by an animal. I still think one can heard some sort of sound. The woods are quite with birds chirping. If it was windy, there would be the sounds of the leaves blowing in the wind. I would think an anmal grabbing a person by the neck and chomping on it, maybe the person could not speak or died instantly. I would like the growl or walking noise of a heavy animal someone would notice. If the bear grabbed on the person with his teeth or swipe with their paws, there would be blood signs and a trail to where the body went. A mountain lion usually sits in the tree and when a person walks by the cat jumps out of the tree on his prey. I do not know about the forest, quicksand or a hole/well in the ground, but the others would have come across it. Sometimes an animal will hide their food. Maybe a hollowed tree trunk that is still standing and dropped a child into it. The little boy that later his clothes were found 12 miles away, could be a man in a bear costume as a joke/clown that attracts little kids and when the kid comes close, snatches him, maybe have that liquid they put on a towel/handkerchief that puts out a person. No screams. The bear/man can sit and wait until the family goes and looks for the boy. A person would not walk up to a bear.

Aliens. End of story. Also, I would get a 4 way GoPro so IF they found my hat they would have an idea. But then again, I'm NEVER going to a park or forest ALONE, OR even with a group! Seen the movie Predator? Brrrr!

I'd say the photographer and the surveyor were murdered by their respective companions. If they were the last people to see them alive, and the initial evidence in both cases is basically word of mouth, from those people, that would be the best, and most likely assumption. The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

This is so fascinating and bizarre. I've never heard of people just vanishing outside of ghost stories told around the campfire or maybe around Halloween. If some creature like Bigfoot is real there must be a population so them to continue the species. How are they this good at hiding to never see a trace of whatever is doing these abductions?

Yea some of them sound pretty freaky but some sounded more like murder covered up. I mean that 1 dude who was a survivalist could have been killed and then set up to look like he was out there, a wild animal would have simply disposed of the body.

I suppose the majority of those who do go missing are people who get lost in these national parks. It possible that some are victims of foul play. There are instances where the military get involved in a search. Whether it be the National Guard or others. There is no big foot.

Mr. Ballen is a great story teller of true crime and missing persons, etc. These are creepy no doubt. I don’t know the answers but I do know that mountain lions are super quiet and fast and if they can kill elk (which they do) they could definitely take and kill kids and possibly smaller adults. I heard a story of a mountain lion taking a family’s dog and lifting it over their 6’ fence. I thought ok, it was a small dog but no this was a Rottweiler! Rottweilers are big dogs, 90lbs or more. So they could easily take a small child up a tree or run with it. Grabbing it by the neck would kill it and the person might not be able to scream. I don’t know about the young man in the last story but if he was smallish…it’s possible. I know one mountain lion killed a 18 year old cross country runner in CO so it’s possible.

Both the tiger hunter guy and the photographer at Crater Lake were eaten by animals, IMO. Anyone can fall asleep while leaning against a tree waiting for prey --- all that "but that would never happen to THIS guy" stuff is nonsense. He left food out in the open at his campsite? That alone tells me he was being careless, and it definitely makes all of those "but this guy was so good, he'd never be eaten by a bear!" claims seem quite silly. If he was really that flawless an outdoorsman, then he wouldn't have left food out at his camp! The food at his camp was probably left undisturbed because whatever ate him was no longer hungry. Given more time, it probably would have come back and ransacked his camp - the search just got there first. The Crater Lake photographer probably got lost and either died or was dying of exposure before being taken by a mountain lion. People don't generally visit Crater Lake in the winter, which is why he needed a buddy with an ATV to take him there in the first place -- the roads in aren't even open to regular traffic that time of year. Winter conditions there are really brutal. The other cases are genuinely weird, but these two seemed out of place to me.

You should look up a picture of vanished people and cave systems in America. It’s a map and it shows where most people vanish with out a trace and it just so happens that the place where people go missing the most in America are actually in the same places where America’s largest unexplored cave systems are…. Makes you think is there something we don’t know yet in those caves? Our are people falling through holes into the cave and stuck never to be found. Either way check out the picture and see what you think.
