Is Bandung the perfect place to live in Indonesia?
Following our dream of a travel day on the Bullet Train in our last video, we found ourselves in Bandung, known for it's volcanoes, tea plantations, and relatively cool tropical climate.
In this video we go out for a walk to see what we can find in this town, dropping by Braga to take a peek at the shopping scene here.
We really enjoyed our time in Bandung and it was refreshing to have cooler weather during our time. Would you live in Bandung?
Thanks for watching! Share this with a friend you want to take on an Indonesia trip soon!
Much love,
Jacob and Emma

It really is! We really loved the cooler temperature, it was a nice break from the heat. Where else do you like visiting in Indonesia?

Vacation spots in Bandung are scattered in the north and south. You’ve got cafes at the top of the hills in Dago and Lembang, Kawah Putih, craters, plus strawberry and tea plantations, and hot springs in Ciwidey. Bandung is surrounded by mountains, so it’s known for its veggie-based food, making it pretty vegetarian-friendly. The locals in West Java are Sundanese, and the text at the museum was in Sundanese, not Indonesian.
@DisappearforDays
@DisappearforDays 10 дней назад
Oh really, we weren't aware of how veggie friendly it was, but that makes so much sense! That makes sense with the language, though, I think we still wouldn't have been able to understand all too much 😅
@portal.unique

@@DisappearforDays 😆 You will find a very different language when you move to Jogja/East Java, they speak Javanese same as Balinese in Bali or Sasak language in Lombok... very different languages, we can't understand each other, but we are united in Bahasa Indonesia. Stay safe and enjoy Indonesia, guys 👋
@pemainball

The writing on the wall is in the Sundanese ethnic language, which is still used today as a communication tool among Sundanese people, especially in West Java province. Sundanese is the second-largest ethnic group in Indonesia after the Javanese. Bandung is the capital of West Java, and its main ethnic group is Sundanese. Every province in Indonesia has its own ethnic language.
@DisappearforDays

Oh righttt! That makes sense! I don't think we would have been able to understand much even if it wasn't Sudanese 😂😅

Okay so, allow me to explain some things that you might be missing. 1. Jakarta is in fact always been the capital of indonesia since the dutch era (batavia) but soon to be changed though since we are in a process of building the new capital city. And culturally west java and jakarta are different. West java are the home for the sundanese tribe which the language was seen at the video (the one you didn't understand) and jakarta is the home for the betawi tribe speaking mainly betawinese. 2. Gedung sate is the office for the governor of west java so you actually was inside a governor palace. 3. There's a famous dutch bakery in braga street where they still serve items all the way since the colonials time. 4. Bandung is in literal crater of an ancient mountain and it used to be a lake. So it explains the cool breeze that you have in bandung So there you go, it might not be all because I'm not living in bandung but as fellow west javan citizen i think i can give a little insight of our provincial capital. Oh and by the way you guys should definitely visit jogjakarta since it's the only monarchy (yes monarchy) under a republic state.

9:45 indeed it's teh talua.. which litterally means "egg tea".. so no wonder when you said it's similar to egg coffee. Typically this kind of drink I believe is originated from west sumatra and you can find anywhere wherever there's padang/minang restaurant or little shop. Because the shop (kedai pak ciman) you visited is specialized in west sumatran food. I know because my office is just a few buildings from it.
@DisappearforDays

FYI The writing on the monument is in sundanese ethnic/ tribe language, In Fact: there are 583 languages and dialects spoken by the different ethnic groups in Indonesia. Indonesia people use Bahasa Indonesia language as their national language to communicate and unite people across Indonesia, because every indonesia region has its own language, I would say Bahasa Indonesia is like "mini-english" , we use english to communicate with people from different countries, but in indonesia they use Bahasa to communicate with indonesian people from different region, so at least most of indonesia people they speak minimum 2 languages (1 Ethnic/ tribe Language + 1 Bahas Indonesia) and also they can speak english but in various level, even in the same island of java from jakarta (Betawi Ethic), West Java (Sundanese Ethnic), Cetral Java to East Java (Javanese Ethnic) they speak totally different languanges and they use Bahasa to communicate with each other, even myself, i was born and raised as sundanese i have to use bahasa when I visit jakarta or central java to communicate with people, but when i visit bandung i can use sundanese language because they can understand it :) but now in this modern era some indonesian people can speak 3 or 4 languages and cross-cultural marriage become one of the factors, e.g. their parents are coming from different ethic/ tribe so their kids can speak different ethic languages, and enjoy your trip! Cheers :)

Jakarta has its own special provincial region called Daerah Khusus Ibukota/DKI (Special Capital Region) which is only one city and will be change to DK (Special Region) since Indonesia is moving the Capital city to Nusantara in Kalimantan (Borneo Island). The sentences in the Monument is not Bahasa Indonesia, even if you are a master in Bahasa Indonesia you will not be able to translated them because they are in "Sundanese" which is the local West Java language.

Java has various regional languages in each province, for example DKI Jakarta speaks Betawi, Banten speaks Sundanese Banten, West Java speaks Sundanese and Central Java, East Java and Yogyakarta speak Javanese. These languages are regional languages with the national language of Indonesian. The same applies to provinces on islands other than Java. Generally, Indonesians are polyglot: National Language (Bahasa Indonesia), Regional Language (Sundanese, Javanese, Malay, Balinese, Minang and others), and the third is International Language. Indonesia has 716 regional languages.

Jakarta has long history...... previously was known as 'Sunda Kelapa' a very strategic port since around the 10th Century.......in circa 1525 ,the Portuguese takes over.....in 1527 ,prince Fatahillah (Cirebon Sultanate) ,fought the Portuguese ,and won the war. Then called the city 'Jayakarta' ,meaning City of victory........About a Century later ,when the Dutch occupy ,it was named Batavia ,based on the indegenious ethnic Betawi. The Dutch also made the city as centre port........ After the proclamation of independence (17 -8 -1945) ,it is decided that Jakarta (Jayakarta) be the capital city ........ During war against Allied Forces (Dutch + British) in 1945-1949 ,the city was taken and made as base city by the Allied Forces...... Indonesia moved it's capital city to Jogjakarta ,where the Sultan allows the Government to use all facility......so ,despite being in West Java ,Jakarta is considered as it's own Province.......... That writtings in the Bandung Monument is in Sundanese language ...... Bandung is also incredible....as the Allied Forces enter Bandung , the people prefers to burn their houses ,rather than give it to colonizers........

Sila is NOT please in bahasa, in bahasa Please = Tolong/mohon. Depending on the context. Which is a bit confusing for you because "Tolong" can also translated in English to "Help", again depending on the context. Bahasa Indonesia is different than Malay, so you might just confused it to Malay because Sila in Malay = Please in English. 😅

@@mvtchannel7705 yeah you pretty much got that right, i didn't see the whole sentence in the video, that's why i only explain the Sila about, the reason why i didn't give an example like silakan is because every Indonesian always say it fully "silakan" Rarely anyone say "sila" As a word unless you were Malay ofc.

Did you really put a Malaysian flag on a Bandung video? Oh boyyy, 😝 Indonesians are generally meek and forgiving, we tend to overlook all kinds of offenses and brush them off like it’s no big deal… But *never* when it comes to slapping a Malaysian flag on anything Indonesian 🤣 Don’t feel too bad for not understanding what’s written on the wall, though-it’s not in Indonesian. It’s actually Sundanese, the local language (not dialect) spoken mainly in West Java, where Bandung is the capital. And just to be clear: *Sundanese* and not Sudanese. If you're curious about the meaning, here's basically what the first part of the poem says: ᮜᮨᮙᮂ ᮘᮩᮀᮠᮁ ᮊᮥ ᮘᮨᮁᮊᮂ, ᮜᮍᮤᮒ᮪ ᮕᮤᮔᮥᮂ ᮊᮥ ᮛᮂᮙᮒ᮪ ᮑ ᮙᮤᮜᮤᮊ᮪ ᮠᮤᮓᮨᮕ᮪: ᮝᮛᮤᮞᮔ᮪ ᮒᮤ ᮕᮛ ᮊᮛᮥᮠᮥᮔ᮪ ᮔᮥ ᮍᮛᮊ᮪ᮞ ᮊᮥ ᮌᮝᮦ, ᮔᮥ ᮛᮥᮙᮝᮒ᮪ ᮊᮥ ᮓᮥᮃ ᮔᮌᮢᮤ ᮔᮥ ᮓᮤᮠᮛᮤᮛᮤᮀᮊᮩᮔ᮪ ᮓᮤᮔ ᮓᮅᮔ᮪ ᮃᮝᮤ ᮒᮨᮙ᮪ᮕᮒ᮪ ᮄᮙᮥᮒ᮪ ᮘᮛᮩᮊᮂ ᮒᮥᮁ ᮞᮦᮝᮥ ᮊᮌᮥᮙ᮪ᮘᮤᮛᮃᮔ᮪ ᮆᮃᮁ ᮊᮝᮞ᮪ ᮎᮄ ᮝᮜᮥᮍᮔ᮪ ᮓᮤᮔ ᮞᮨᮜ-ᮞᮨᮜ ᮘᮒᮥ ᮑ ᮕᮥᮞᮊ ᮃᮔ᮪ᮏᮩᮔ᮪: ᮝᮒᮨᮞ᮪ᮔ ᮒᮨᮌᮜ᮪ ᮞᮤ ᮃᮝᮒ᮪-ᮃᮝᮒ᮪ The earth rich with blessings, the sky full of grace This belongs to the living: a gift from ancestors past Tended through labor, nurtured in prayer This land encircled by bamboo leaves A place of joy and endless laughter Bustling like a river rushing over stones This is your inheritance: where borders meet fields of green Like a meadow from a fairytale dream.

@DisappearforDays 9 дней назад
Hahaha, it was such a rookie error, hopefully we are forgiven for such a crime 😂 Thank you for the translation! We would never have known otherwise and had no idea Sudanese was a different language to BI! 😯
@kilantravels
@kilantravels 9 дней назад
@@DisappearforDays We’re not quite sure if we can forgive you for putting a Malaysian flag on an Indonesian video just yet-you might need to go through a tribunal for that one 😁. And yes, Sundanese (not Sudanese, please) is a totally different language from Indonesian. In fact, there are even some false friends between the two. For example, the first word in that poem, ᮜᮨᮙᮂ (read: lemah), means “soil” or “earth” in Sundanese, but in Indonesian, “lemah” means “weak.” Sundanese even has its own script! If you’ve ever looked at your photos or videos from Bandung, you might have noticed a different script under the street names written in the Latin alphabet (like that of Braga Street that you used for your thumbnail)-that’s the Sundanese script. Indonesia has over 300 languages, and these aren’t just dialects like Penang Malay and Johor Malay or Mandarin and Hakka; they’re entirely different languages.
