This signifies that on average, each person in India generates approximately 8 kilograms of plastic waste per year. Compared to many other countries, this amount is relatively low. However, despite the low per capita production, India still contributes significantly to the global plastic waste issue due to its large population.
1. India ranks among the top 12 countries responsible for 60% of the world's mismanaged plastic waste.
2. Despite India's low per capita plastic waste production, expected mismanaged waste in 2024 is estimated to be 7.4 million tons.
3. India releases nearly 392,000 tons of microplastics and over 31,000 tons of chemical additives into waterways annually.

5. By April 2024, nearly half of the world's population will reside in areas where plastic waste exceeds management capacity.
6. India's Plastic Overshoot Day, when plastic waste surpasses waste management capacity, is projected to be April 23.
