As a Kenyan, I can tell you that the tribe name is Samburu and not Maasai. Culture looks similar but they have differences and have their own language. If you ever go for a safari, try Sasaab luxury tented camp and you'll be introduced to the Samburu community.

They're all Maa. Only that the Samburus were cut off during the Maasai immigration southwards. They were left north and interbred with other the Cushites but retained their Maa identity

African spirituality touches on the totality of life itself, it has a respect of totality of life especially among the family. In African societies even among the maa speaking dialects of the Maasai,Samburu,Dorobo,Ilchamus & the Njemps the law of opposites or of complementarity ment you did not get into the trap of debating the equality of man & woman, because you could not have one without the other. It was almost asking whether your mother was your equal, because as a man,if it wasn't for your mother, you would not be here, both famale & male principles new their roles in the aspirations of the clan & the nation as a whole.

To my understanding even if it's a married couple women dance with women and men with men only. They are of old school of the Old Testament bible. The international visitors that go to watch the Maasai, I think they allowed the women to jump with men for tour and because they are foreign. But if you are african from anywhere they would rather tell you about what they prefer. So the jump is for men and the bead necklace shaking is for women. That is how I understand it.

Very long post alert! Regarding Africans staying in touch with their ancestral homelands, it should be known that Africa is not homogenous. It is not necessarily as depicted in this video all over Africa. For instance, in Nigeria, though we may live in the towns and cities, we can all trace our lineage back to our villages. Some people remain in the villages. Others move to urban areas for work, education and what they feel is a better life. Some go for ‘privacy,’ where they can escape interference from kinsmen and women. For those in the urban areas, we stay in touch with ‘home,’ i.e. the village. People move back to the village to retire. We go home for holidays, festivals, family celebrations such as marriage rites, burials etc and we go home to solve problems (traditional medicine for conditions defying Western medicine, family disputes etc). So, even though we may live far from home, we typically tend to stay in touch with it and our traditions to varying degrees. I think it is necessary to think about why people move from their rural ancestral homes to the urban areas and away from traditional African ways of living. There are many reasons. Here are a few: 1. Globalisation Village life is as close to traditional Africa as it gets. People live off the land and in community with one another. We have communal resources that belong to everyone in that community. For example, in my village, we have an expanse of ‘wilderness’ that hardly anything grows on (it’s changing now, though) and it consists largely of white sand. Indigenes are allowed to use the white sand for building but you can’t sell it. And outsiders are not allowed access to it. So, that is community property, a source of building material for free, for ever (unless nature changes). We are rich in natural resources and sell a portion of our farm produce or crafts for subsistence. Traditionally, trade was by barter or by local currency, which included cowrie shells. However, with Western interruption, our traditional capital (natural resources) has become devalued. Now, you need money to buy and sell, not bartering or cowrie shells. This means the traditional African has become cash poor, though still resource rich. From a global perspective we are ‘poor,’ not because we don’t have resources but because a new ‘era’ came where our resources mean very little and now, you must use the White man’s form of currency (money, notes, coins), you must join the White man’s economy (i.e. get a job rather than work in your family farm, family cottage industry or start your own trade. In my language it is called ‘iruo oyibo, which means ‘White man’s work’ rather than ‘iruo Urhobo’ meaning Urhobo (my tribe) work or traditional African work). And you must have skills that are bought and sold in the White man’s economy. And to get started with all of this, you have to learn the White man’s language(s) and system of education, which disparages anything from Indigenous Africa. If you refuse to get into this Western system, you will struggle to earn a living in today’s globalised world. Think how much one can earn from making beads or textiles for their community. Hence, even those who remain in the villages still send their children to Western-style schools, learn Western languages for global communication and get involved with technology (mobile phones, laptops, internet, digital cash transfer etc). If the opportunity exists to do better financially, wouldn’t you at least be curious about it? 2. Easier living Traditional African lifestyles depend on doing things traditionally, just as it is around the world. Today, many people use labour-saving devices in their homes. Traditionally, things are done by hand. Many modern day Africans want an easier life, just like modern people do around the world. To have that life, you most likely need to earn better money rather live off subsistence farming or crafts. Another reason to move to urban Africa, get Western education, work in ‘White man’s work” and earn more than you possibly could making beads, weaving textiles, selling crops etc. 3. Westernisation/Colonisation Along with getting a Western education come Western ideologies and agendas. Thereby Africans learn (erroneously) to devalue their culture and aspire to Western ways of doing things. Colonisation worked hard to wipe out African culture because a people are easier to control when they give up their culture (which affirms them and supports their wellbeing) and embrace that of their coloniser (which devalues them and erodes their wellbeing, making them dependent on their colonisers). Thankfully, there are now movements by Africans to decolonise African school systems and African people, and to help us rightly esteem our indigenous cultures. Remember that Africa is not homogenous and things may be different from country to country, or even within regions of the same country. For some, natural disaster and conflict may necessitate leaving their homelands and therefore, their ways. For others, they migrate for economic reasons but still stay in touch with their homeland and culture. There are still others who may abandon their culture for personal reasons, such as parents not passing it on, mixed heritage and not choosing any side of it, or family moving often for economic reasons. Whatever the case, there is always a reason for everything and sometimes, people just start their own new ways of living.
