Guarding the Rio San Juan, the Fortaleza in El Castillo, Nicaragua is an impressive medieval castle and structure.
Now 350 years old, the fort's purpose as a defensive stalwart against the pirates of the Caribbean Sea has long vanished. However its presence is a constant reminder of Spain's rule of the Americas and the ties to colonial naval trade routes.
Today the village of El Castillo, population 1500, still remains an isolated outpost. Accessible only by boat, the village serves as a gateway for the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve. Without motor vehicles, the narrow streets and wooden homes display a simpler and rural maritime lifestyle.
After visiting the Castle, it doesn't take long for Matt to display the village's center including where to stay and what to eat when visiting El Castillo, Nicaragua.
