Protests, strikes and demonstrations hit the tourism industry in Cusco, Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu. Leaving hundreds stranded, having to walk over 10km's to enter or leave the World Heritage Site.
We unfortunately get caught up in it, after spending 5 days in the mountains trekking, we emerge only to find that nobody is here at Machu Picchu, as hundreds were walking the opposite direction as we entered, we did find it strange that people of all ages and abilities were walking the long 10km+ walk across the train tracks towards Hydro Electronica.
We still don't even know if we will be able to leave here as easily as the first load of tourists did; & we may well be some of the last tourists to explore this World Heritage Site for quite some time!

What a shame after all that trekking, hopefully you will be able to get there and see it! It is sad but in a way nice to see everyone stand together to fight for what they believe in. Take care x

100%, look at the trains in the UK.. They got sold out and privatised and look at how expensive they are now! Locals etc get ripped off when this sort of thing happens.

Proper shame... We had no guide up there, it was nice to see the place with little to no tourists though, its quite a rare thing.. Thanks Kate!

The Inca Trail is closed for February, but the actual Machu Picchu is back open as usual. 👍🏽
